Hi. I want to get away for a week or so to the Lake George, NY area. The problem is my car is a clunker. Its been really good for the past 8 years, but I bought it used and I'm well over 100,000 miles. I'm really hesitant to dive 3 1/2 hours away with it. So I was looking into taking the train and the renting a car up there. But as I did a bit more research it seems Lake George has a really good Trolley service. Now I'm thinking of just grabbing a taxi from the train station to Lake George and use the trolley. Is this realistic? I'll be traveling with a 7 year old so she'll think its fun, but is it dependable? Are taxis hugely expensive up there? Any advice would be appreciated. thanks

Where would you be staying in LG? That makes all the difference...

DH has gone every summer for 33 years and now I have gone every summer and sometimes at other times in the year for the past 10 years...

To use using the trolley would not be an option at all because we stay well outside the village and we are always coming and going to the village and other surrounding areas.

I agree with the pp that it depends on where you're staying. If you're staying right in the village, then walking and using the trolley would work. It also depends on what you plan to do. If you're just going to the beach, walk the village, and play minigolf, then that's all very close together. But if you're going to go to 6 Flags Great Escape, or the water park, or the mall/outlets, then I would suggest renting a car. I don't know how much taxis are as I live close enough that I always drive.

It's a beautiful, relaxing place! I think you'll both love it!

I also don't know the price of taxis, because I always drive. But the trolleys are great IN the village, and as fas as the outlets, but they get spotty out to Great Escape. A rental might be your best bet, since you will be able to come and go as you please, you aren't on someone else's schedule.

On the other hand, if you have a hotel right in the village, you might not even need the trolley. It is a very walkable area, and you won't have to fight to park. Then if you want to head farther out, you could call a cab.

It really does depend on where you are staying. When we go and stay at the campground a little north of the village they have their own trolley service into the vilage and to the Great Escape. You could check out what the hotel/resort/campground you are staying at offers in terms of that.

I don't see taxi's as a viable form of transportation in the area. Where would you be taking the train to? Albany? Fort Edward? It would be difficult to get a taxi at all in Fort Edward and Albany is 60 miles away from Lake George (Fort Edward is probably at least 20). It would be very expensive. Here's a link to information about area transportation. http://www.cityofglensfalls.com/index.aspx?nid=132

You may have better luck taking a bus. I'm not sure, but Trailways may have a stop in Lake George Village.

As for the Trolley...It's a tourist trolley that hits the main spots. I don't think it's free. Here's a link to the schedule http://ny-glensfalls.civicplus.com/documentcenterii.aspx You'll want to look at the Trolley Schedule for Lake George South.

It will depend on where you stay and what you want to do whether you'll be able to get by without a car. I just don't think it will be very economical to take a taxi from Albany. Check into the bus. http://www.trailwaysny.com/

Now, having said all that, there's something you need to know about. If you're planning on staying in the Village of Lake George and swimming in the lake you may have a little problem. There's been a sewage spill that they haven't completely fixed yet. http://www.poststar.com/articles/2009/07/07/news/local/doc4a539caa77dcd287512805.txt

If your motel has a nice pool then you may be ok. I wouldn't want anyone to go to all the trouble of getting up here and then being disappointed.
