Going to an event don't want to spend $400 + a night staying at the waldorf. can someone please suggest a place close to the Waldorf and cheaper than $400 + a night (btw we need a Saturday night stay over).

lots of variables there. first remember WA is on Park ave, lol tends to be high rent district (as if all of manhattan isn't high) but pretty much any thing in midtown is going to be pricey. think Disney, you are paying for location.
2nd, "near" is also relative. Me, since my family lives in NYC I rarely get a hotel but when I do I love the village, soho, lower manhattan area. IMO those are still very easy to get to other parts of the city.

I like the hotel Beacon which is on 75th street (WA is around 52nd) and is about 275 depending on the season.

search booking.com they usually have a great selection.

The link below takes you to Frommers NYC Hotel listings, they show them by neighborhood and cost (number of dollar signs). I find Frommers to be right on the money most of the time. That being said, my family is not afraid to jump on the subway, and our last trip (last spring break) we stayed at the Brooklyn Marriott, a block or 2 from 2 subway stations, fantastic price, got a large room (yes in NYC, and it was only extra $20 a night) and could get to anywhere we wanted in the city via subway in minutes without having to find secure parking at $40 for 5 hours.

Check out the Roosevelt. We stayed there just before Christmas - it is at 45 E 45th St. Looks like is is about 5 or 6 blocks from the WA,

We found this to be a lovely hotel, and our room rate for 2 dbl beds was about $200/including taxes. They had a great code on facebook!

We loved the location. It was close to everything.

On Lexington (other entrance to the WA), there is I *think* a Sheraton across the street. But I also like the Beacon that someone else mentioned. It is right by a subway entrance and there are restaurants and stores (a fantastic grocery store is right across the street) all around. The rooms have kitchenettes. Not cheap, but the rooms are actually nicer than the Waldorf as far as being more modern, with coffee makers, fridge, etc. I have stayed at the Waldorf several times and gotten good rates, but I don't really care for the location. Also, the rooms while being lovely in an old fashioned way, are a bit "tired".

Try "Hotel 57" it is on lex and 57th street. Stayed there a couple of years ago. Very new and clean.

Check travelzoo. Decide how close you need to be to the Waldorf. 10 minute walk? 20 minute walk? 30 minutes by subway?

What dates?

The Doubletree Metropolitan is just a couple of blocks away - I have stayed there for very reasonable rates depending on when you are going. Corporate Account #0560041604 will take 20% off the Best Available Rate (assuming there is availability for the code to be used). That is Hilton's MVP Rate and can be used by anyone with a Hilton Honors number.
