Need a hotel for a visit to statueof liberty

Hi all, just need some advice. We are finishing off our holiday to Los Angeles when we stop at JFK before home by staying over the night new York area.
We arrive at 7 am from los Angeles and catch our flight from JFK to Manchester at 6pm the following day.
I just need advise on the cheapest way to visit the statue of liberty and maybe the Brooklyn botanicale gardens in the time we have left.
Family of four need room for the night and some way to transport to and from places.
So the advice I need is where should we stay to make it cost effective and how to travel around ?
Also wonder about the cost of the statue and the ferry ?

Hiya,

Transfers from JFK to ANY HOTEL (Maybe anywhere too) in Manhattan is a fixed rate (plus the Tunnel or bridge toll) of I think around $45. Not a bad deal for a family IMHO. Same again back.

As far as hotels, I have stayed in the Holiday Inn Midtown (57th St) and that was a good price and central (two block from Central Park, Three from Times Square) and the subway is about a block away too.

Last time I went, did a guiede tour with a tour around the water of Liberty Island. Unless you really want to go on the island and into the statue (LOTS of steps) then best views are from the water.

We've just returned and stayed at the Doubletree Suites in Times Square. We took the Airtrain from JFK, then the E line subway into Manhattan which was $7.50 each. Hopefully the statue will gave reopened by your visit.

i have no clue why you would want to go to the brooklyn botanical gardens..
when in New York, i stay on the island of manhattan.
to venture off is to invite adventures that i'm sure you're not interested in....new york is still a very dangerous place, no matter that the statistics have improved...if you leave the island and even on the island if you're so foolish as to venture far afield, you run the risk of paying the price...

(i lived in new york for 3 years, so i sort of know what i'm talking about)..

personally, i stay away from the subway - but that's me...others do ride it..
i don't....too many very bad experiences to take the risk..

if you've never been to new york before, i would do the very touristy double decker bus around manhattan.....it may be cheesy tourist, but it gets the job done....you'll see manhattan....
there is a southern route and a northern route..
you can do both in a day..
as for the statue, she was closed due to hurricane sandy....not sure when she'll reopen again...
the boat to the statue and ellis island is very interesting and picturesque...a nice way to spend a few hours...assuming you're there in warm weather...

as for gardens - central park is an amazing place....no need to venture through tunnels or over bridges to brooklyn..
stay in manhattan and go for a long liesurely walk in central park...

(i am a manhattan snob....truly - in 3 years living there i only crossed into queens once and brooklyn once - both times for weddings...
that is, other than to get to the airports...
manhattan has everything you'd ever want to see...why travel into the hinterlands?)

lee if you want to visit the brooklyn botanical gardens do so...it's in Prospect Park, the central park of brooklyn...with a lot less tourists...your safety isn't a issue, have your street smarts about you as would if anyother city..don't let beth scare you.

ride the subway, it is the second best way to get around the city, the first being on foot...again don't let beth scare you

again...you don't need to ride the red buses to see the city, you can do it all by foot and subway and city buses.

if you just want to see Lady lib, ride the free staten island ferry

if you actually want to stand next to lady lib, or go up to the pedestal or even til to the crown, the only seller is http://statuecruises.com/ but as said The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are temporarily closed until further notice.

enjoy your trip, don't let anyone else's fears stop you from doing what you want...everthing you want to do is in tourist areas, and safe to do.

when are you visiting? how much are you looking to spend in USD for a hotel for the night?

Thanks for the responses, we'll be starting our trip in manhattan and seeing the sights (central park etc) at the start of our trip. We are just staying in Brooklyn the night before we come home so thought it would be nice to see the statue from the water but I wonder if it's possible to get a ferry from Brooklyn promenade as that would be closer to our hotel and we could avoid manhattan.
Btw which is best AirTran or hotel shuttle buses ? For new york
If no ferry from Brooklyn which is the Cheapest way to get to the ferry terminal ?

Would you not be better staying in Downtown Manhattan if all you're planning to do on your overnight stay is the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn?

I've stayed in the Millenium Hilton Downtown and it's not that far from Battery Park (for the ferry to SOL) or the Brooklyn Bridge.
