Need 3 pts, can I pay for 24 and bank the extras?

Good Morning,

I know this is a weird question but for a 2015 reservation I will need 3 extra points. Instead of borrowing from 2016, we can buy up to 24 extra points, one time per year, from Disney, correct? I may want to try for VGF at 7 mos and would need those extra points but if that isn't available I might have 21 left over.

So my question is, can I buy all 24 extra points from Disney for a 2015 reservation, not use some of them and bank those into 2016?

I thought I'd ask here first before trying to explain it to member services.

Thanks!

You can't purchase more one-time-use points than what's needed to confirm a reservation. Also, OTU Points can't be banked/borrowed.

I guess that makes sense. Can you borrow more than once in a year? So I can borrow the 3 points from 2016 and then more if I need them later?

Thanks for your help. I've not done much borrowing before.

Just FYI and I am by far no expert at all but I was on the phone yesterday with DVC getting information for a September cruise using my points and they told me I could pay for OTU points for a cruise that is 11 months away at this point. Maybe I heard incorrectly and I know we are talking about villas but throwing it out there in case someone knows differently since this may affect my planning and would rather be corrected if mistaken.
Thanks.

There are different windows in which you can purchase OTU points that are based on collection:
  • One-time-use vacation points used for Disney Vacation Club resort reservations can only be used up to 7 months prior to arrival.
  • One-time-use vacation points for Disney Collection and World Collection reservations can be used according to the booking guidelines for each individual collection.

You can purchase all 24 one time use points at 7 months out for a reservation that costs more than 24 total and bank some points. You just cannot bank the one time use points. There is no requirement that you use up all of your own current use year points to purchase one-time use points. Thus, for example, assume you need 150 points total for a reservation and you have 140. In making the 150 point reservation, you can use just 126 of your own points for the reservation, purchase 24 one-time use points to complete the 150 needed for the reservation, and bank the other 14 in your account..

They made me use all of my current use year points before allowing me to buy the one time use points. I wanted to buy 24 one time use points and leave some points in my current use year, but they wouldn't let me.

There is an easy workaround for this.

Simply make a reservation using 21 points using current UY points (outside of 30 days)using the points you want to "save". Then make the reservation that you want to buy point for. and then cancel the 21 point reservation.

As a note you are not required to borrow points before using purchased points, you must just have inadequate points in you current use year

I get frustrated when companies make the system like this that forces you and them to do extra work. If it is possible to do with the above scenario, then just make it available on the get go and not force someone to make a dummy reservation and then cancel to bank. It is the same with a price adjustment at the store. If I can return something that has gone on sale the week after I bought it, then just give me the price adjustment and don't force me to go buy another identical item and then go right up to return with the previous receipt.
