My sister just had brain surgery this week for the 2nd time. This time there were some complications and she needs help.

I'm going up to see her and help out but need to know the nearest airport to the Bethesda Medical Center. Is it Reagan National? Or Dulles?

I'm not sure if I'm driving or flying yet but I want to get all the basics figured out while I'm lining up who I can get to help out with my kids while I'm gone.

Thanks.

You can fly into Ronald Regan National Airport and just take the metro directly to Bethesda. If you have familiy that can pick you up or renting a car, you can fly into Dulles Airport and fly into Baltimore airport.

ETA: I don't know what part of GA you are in but I can drive from my house to Augusta, GA in about 9 hours. It really isn't that bad of drive.

I'm sorry to hear your sister is having such difficulty.

Reagan is closer but Dulles isnt that far.

Area Terminals

Reagan National Airport

1. Driving: From the Airport, exit north on George Washington Parkway. After about 2 miles, you will see but do not take a left exit for Memorial Bridge and Arlington National Cemetery. Be sure to bear right and continue on GW Parkway, which follows the Potomac River on the Virginia side, for approximately 12 miles. From right lane, exit onto I-495, Capital Beltway, heading north to Maryland. You will be on the inner loop of the Beltway. Take Exit 34, Rt. 355 South, Wisconsin Ave., towards Bethesda. Get in left lane. Cross Cedar Lane intersection; at first median crossing (no light), turn left into the National Naval Medical Center. At the guard station, show ID. From here you will be directed to parking.

2. Using METRO (subway): Take Yellow Line towards Mt Vernon Square. Exit at Gallery Place METRO station. Take Red Line towards Grosvenor or Shady Grove. Exit at Medical Center METRO. At top of escalator, turn right and cross Wisconsin Ave. Show ID at guard stations. Approximately 35 minutes.

3. Other ground transportation options from National.

Dulles International Airport

1. Driving: Drive east on the Dulles Airport Access Road for approximately 13 miles. Exit onto I-495 North, the Capital Beltway, towards Maryland on the inner loop of the Beltway. Take Exit 34, Rt. 355 South, Wisconsin Ave. towards Bethesda. Get in left lane. Cross Cedar Lane intersection; at first median crossing (no light), turn left into the National Naval Medical Center. At the guard station, show ID. From here you will be directed to parking.

I'm not sure about public transportation to Bethesda medical center. BWI or the new name Thurgood Marshall is in Linthicum, Md. The address on the website is 7590 Friendship Road, BWI Airport, MD 21240. The site also says they are 45 minutes from Bethesda, 1 hour away if traffic is bad.

Here is their link.

Good luck with your planning and I hope all goes well with your sisters surgery. You are a wonderful sister to be there for her, I wish I had such a relationship with my sisters.

If you can afford it, look into getting a flight into Reagan National. You can get on the Metro right there and take it to the Medical Center Metro stop in Bethesda. Btw, you are talking about the National Naval Medical Center right. You can go to http://www.wmata.com/ use the Metro Trip Planner, put in your trip and find out where to transfer/how much it would cost/etc.

agnes!

You are right. It is officially called the National Naval Medical Center. My sisters friend keeps calling it Bethesda Medical Center.

After talking with DH, I'm going to drive. I decided I needed the flexibility in case my sister needs me to stay longer than planned. Plus she has texted me saying she wants to move to a hospital closer to home so she can see her 11 year old son more often. I was so surprised to get a text from her while she's in Intensive Care. I thought that stuff wasn't allowed in there. I'm going to help her work on that while I'm there. (After first seeing if it's even feasible based on her condition!).

Now that transportation to MD is figured out, I've got to start on hotels. I've been to Washington DC before with DH and the kids but never by myself so it's going to be an interesting trip.

You might want to contact the hospital about hotels. Often they have recommendations and special deals with hotels in the vicinity and will give you good advice so you get lodging that best fits your needs.

Hope things go well and your sister continues to improve!
