We will be staying on Disney and going to an event at the Bob Carr center. Just wondering what people recommend for nearby restaurants (and a bakery). Should we plan a day in downtown and if so what else should we check out? thanks

Really, there is not much to do in Downtown Orlando. There are places to eat just east of I-4 on the Church St. Orange Ave area. But to spend a day...No. And don't walk west, south or north of the Bob Carr.

Thanks. We have been looking at eating at Season 52 which would kind of be on the way. I think we will just stick with that.

There are plenty of good restaurants in downtown Orlando that are perfectly safe enjoy. A few off the top of my mind, Dexters of Thorton Park, Nick's Italian Kitchen are both in Thorton Park, which is a nice area of downtown.

Here's a site that may be helpful:

I'd also recommend taking a short drive north of downtown to Winter Park and the Park Ave. area. Plenty of great restaurants/shopping there that you may be able to make at least a 1/2 day of.

Let me know if you're interested.

Matt,
Thanks for the link. I would appreciate if you mentioned some places in Winter Park. I think the Ravenous Pig is out that way. Also Sprinkles Cupcakes is in Winter Park so that was on the list of after the Bob Carr center.
thanks

Winter Park is about 10 mins north of the Bob Carr off I-4. Not too far out of the way.

Ravenous Pig is definitely good. But to name a few that are on our normal rotation: 310 Park, Luma, Panullo's, Prato, Hillstone (formerly Houston's), Dexter's Winter Park, Armando's Cucina...all are great. I'd highly recommend any of those establishments.

There are a lot of shops on Park Ave, too, if you wanted to spend time there.

I'm not downing Seasons52 in any way. Its a great place to eat. But if you head up to Winter Park, you'll experience Orlando away from the touristy areas and get a sense of how we locals live.

Hope this helps.

I just wanted to mention that there is a free shuttle bus which stops a block from Bob Carr Center if you just want to get a look around downtown Orlando. It runs until around midnight and runs within about a block of a number of the restaurants in Thorton Park. I catch it all of the time right across the street from Lynx Central Station because I like to go to the Orlando Library. This bus is called The Lymo, run by the same Lynx system which charges fare for all of the other buses. Unlike the rest of Lynx, which is unreliable, the Lymo runs about every five minutes. I just thought to mention it because I have heard that parking downtown can be a bear while there are concerts or games going on at Amway Center.

There is a beautiful park at Lake Eola by the Disney outdoor theater in downtown Orlando, which is so lovely that I prefer to go for a picnic when I am eating downtown. The fountain which has been rebuilt since getting struck by lightning and the tall buildings reflected in the lake are very relaxing so I usually get my food from the Publix deli across the stryeet.

Downtown Orlando does not get many tourists since the theme parks took everyone away from the Church Street Station area. A few go to the Orange County Regional History Center and some to sporting events and concerts at Amway Center.

If you still have not decided by the day of your event at Bob Carr, there is a Sheraton Hotel right across the street from Bob Carr Center. Surely the concierge would know downtown Orlando well enough to have some suggestions.
