I am trying to find out what I need to do to add my husband to my National rental. I read the previous posts about it, but I am getting conflicting stories from National. Has anyone done this? How did it work?

I just got my info in the mail & it doesn't say anything about the cost of additional drivers, but it does say any immediate family member or business associate can drive with the renter's prior authorization.

One National agent said $5 per day, unless he was an EC member. If he is also an EC member, then show info at the counter, even though we are using EA.
A second National agent said he doesn't have to pay & doesn't have to be an EC member. He just has to show info on the way out.

I liked the second answer, of course, but would like to hear others' experiences.

THanks! :)

Hi, Gillian!

I saw some conflicting reports, too, so I signed DH up for EA. Until 6/15, you can sign up for free thru National's site, and I figured since it wasn't going to cost us anything I'd get him his own card to show at check-out. I sent an e-mail to National, and their response (which I printed out to bring with us in July) was that with his EA membership, DH will be able to drive for no additional charge. I don't know if this will help you or not, but I hope it does.

Thanks! I asked him to sign up also. Do you know if he has to do anything special to be able to drive my rental?

I emailed National and they wrote back saying that a spouse in a free extra driver when the renter is a EC member. You don't have to do anything to add your husband to your rental, just give him the keys!

Robin's reply is exactly what I was told last Friday when my DW and I picked up our EA rental in Las Vegas. She just joined the EC with the free membership offer (I was already a member through the DC program) specifically so we could avoid the extra driver fee. You can complete the membership application and even print out a copy of the membership card on-line when you complete the membership form. All you will need is driver's license information and date of birth for your spouse.

Thanks again! The two people I spoke with both said he would need to show drivers license & credit card. When I said, even though he is an EC member? they both said yes. I don't see why, since they will have my credit card info, and it's the same account, but as long as we can do it without waiting on a check in line, it's ok with me!!
