Anyone have information on this? DD15 received an 'invitation' and I was wondering if its legit or just another place to get your money.

Our high school has a national honor society that students have to be invited to join. Students are normally chosen due to their GPA. If the invite is from the high school then it should be legit.

This wasn't from the high school. Its from 'The National Society of High School Scholars'. You have to pay a fee to join and they claim there are scholarship opportunities and 'you may list your selection and membership in the Society as one of you significant accomplishments'.

Sounds kind of fishy to me but being new to the high school stuff (at least in the past 25 years ;)) I wanted to see if anyone actually knew about this 'society'.

TIA

I don't think the OP is talking about the National Honor Society. The "National Honor Society" is a completely legit and a wonderful high school organization based upon scholarship, service, leadership and character. It is truly an honor to be invited, and an accomplishment to be inducted. There is no cost to join.

But, the "National Society of High School Honors" is a scam.

I truly understand the confusion, because the names are so similar. ;) And that works to the scammers advantage.

I've been teaching almost two decades and have never heard of this organization. I suspect it's something similar to the Who's Who Among High School Students, which is just a way to get your money.

If they hadn't -- purposefully -- named themselves something so close to the National Honor Society (which, as someone else said) is perfectly legit and is run through the schools, you wouldn't be confused.

I think that all kids get one of those invites. It has nothing to do with grades. How would they find that stuff out anyway without the parent's consent? I know at the beginning of the school year I always had to fill out permission forms whether or not my child's information could be shared with outside sources.

Thanks everyone--

tinkntraining-- l looked at the website you posted and thank!

When DD got this I told her it was not legit and she argued that some kids at her school were in this. I told her I would check into (which means come to the DIS ).

LOL! So true. You are very welcome. I love that site to keep me up on what I should be doing to help my DD in her college quest.

We got this mailing for our daughter. I ran it through the shredder.

Yeah, they tried calling it the "Honor Society for Children with Gullible Parents", but they didn't get enough people to sign up.

There are several different scams like this--you'll probably see more.

My 15-year-old got this last week, too -- the day after he got his invitation to go to Washington with some kind of high school leaders group.

There must be some people who bite on this stuff or the invitations wouldn't keep coming . . .

And if your kids play sports, you will get even more of the "pay us obscene amounts of money and we will make a video of your star athlete to send to schools for athletic scholarships". I got tons of this stuff when I was in high school 12 years ago....it sounds like it is even worse now!

I have to ask you what kind of high school leaders group the invitiation was from because there are several legitimate programs out there for students all across the country....there's Presidential Classroom for Young Americans and Close-Up....I did Presidential Classroom my senior year and my DH did Close-Up his senior year.....although neither one of us went into poly sci in college they were great experiences and I know I'll never regret having my parents send me.

Love that name. :rotfl:

I think calling it a scam might be a bit strong though. As far as I can tell 'The National Society of High School Scholars' is a legit organization that does give out a few scolarships. Of course my guess is that they take in far more money from said gullible parents than they give out in scholarships. You can certainly list it as a "significant accomplishment" I just wouldn't expect anyone to take it seriously.

This stuff doesn't stop once they get in college either. DD just got an invitation to join some freshman scholar society. $50 to join, banquet fees, tons of merchandise options for purchase, and she would get a shot at 1 of 2 scholarships for a whopping $250. Woo Hoo!

I'm sure some of the leadership travel programs do provide positive experiences. My problem with them is that they try to make it seem like it's an honor to even be considered, and only top students are invited to attend; but more often than not, they'll take anyone who will come up with the money. If they market themselves as student travel experiences, that's fine. If they try to sucker students/parents into thinking being invited to attend is some special honor, that's wrong.
