Hey all - I'm doing the Brevard County marriage application and I don't see anywhere to put down what your name will be after the wedding? Does that come on whatever they send next after we send back the application, fee and affadavit?

And are there any limitations to how you can change it? :confused3

Wow you are quick!

Hehehe! I win!! But I had a head start over here from Facebook, since I posted and flipped open the Disboards at the same time! lol :goodvibes

I'm esp. wondering if I can do what I want to change my name. Currently it's Meghan Kathleen Bridget M__________ (just avoiding search engines! lol). So I want to change it to... Meghan Kathleen (first name) M________ (maiden name becomes middle name) L_______ . After spending 28 years with that clunker of a last name, I'm now attached - go figure!

We applied for our marriage certificate in Broward County, FL, so I'm not sure what the Brevard County application looks like. However, it sounds a lot like the application/certificate that we filled out. On our certificate, it asked for "brides name" and my "maiden name" (???). When I asked the lady at the clerk's office whether I should put my married name under the "brides name" section, she told me not to. She told me to put my maiden name in the "brides name" section and that the "maiden name" section was for brides that had been previously married.

So, now, my maiden name appears on my marriage certificate. Just a side note, I didn't run into an issue when changing my name on my legal documents (social security card, driver's license, etc)

You don't put your married name on the license, you put your current legal name. After the wedding when you file your papers with the social security office, that's where you change it. When that comes back your name is officially changed.

We're having our ceremony local, so I'm doing my name-change on LEGALZOOM! I'm just hyphening it, and letting them do all the work. All I'll have to do, is file it and go get my new drivers license. Although, I'm NOT looking forward to going down to the SS office..oye vey! :sad2:

We used Brevard County, and it's exactly what she said! For the purposes of the marriage license you use your maiden name. Your married name only comes into play when you fill out the social security info to change it.

If it makes you feel any better, when they mail you the official license after the wedding, Brevard County addresses the envelope to Mr. & Mrs. His Last Name! :rotfl:

Just for reassurance, I'll add that this was our experience as well.

No worries, all you need to do is put your maiden/legal name. :thumbsup2

Have any UK brides had any problems when it comes to name-changing with a Brevard licence?

I'm planning on hyphenating my surname, but I haven't yet looked into who I need to tell after the wedding and how, but this has me worried now that there isn't a record of my married name?

The record of your married name is the ID you will be applying for back home - NOT your marriage license.

The marriage license says "Hey, I got married!" It doesn't automatically change your name.

That's something you decide to do and then make happen through the proper channels in your country. In the US, it's the Social Security office. Then the Social Security office gives the applicant a new ID card and *that* is the record of her new name. :thumbsup2

ETA: Looks like UK residents go through the Home Office's Identity and Passport Service:

Just wanted to put my two cents in. When you have to change your name on other documents as well like your driver's license and car registration just be aware that you might have to show them your marriage license. My daughter had moved out of state and when it came time to get a new driver's license and car registration she had to prove she changed her last name by showing her marriage license. She had moved and couldnt remember where she had put it and was franctic, they wouldn't take a copy it had to be a certified copy. So please put your marriage license or the certified copy of it in a safe place in case you will need to show it for proof. Different states have different rules so I just wanted everyone to be aware of that.
