Ok. I never thought I would be saying this, but I have a new favorite hotel at WDW. Yes, it is the Yacht Club. Just got back from staying there and the GF. Prior to this trip, I had only stayed at the GF, BWI, WL for extended periods and Riverside (when it was Dixie Landings for a single night), Shades of Green when it was the Disney Inn ages ago, and the Disney Institute before Downtown Disney was even built. I had also visited all the Deluxe and Moderates extensively and seen their grounds and eaten in many of their restaurants. Still, the only 2 hotels I really enjoyed and would return to were the GF and WL. And the one I really, really loved was the GF. But I heard a lot of positive things about the Yacht Club on these boards and hubby really wanted to try the pool so I added a few days to our stay to try it. And we were not sorry! Everything was perfect.

We were greeted by an absolutely lovely cast member at check-in named Abby. She was definitely great and very nice--a definite Disney gem. She sent us to room 2009, a non-smoking waterview room, that I will forever request when we return. Admittedly, the walk from the elevator was pretty much as long as possible--we thought we were walking to the MK! But the view was worth it--a corner room, facing forward on the lake, with a balcony overlooking the Boardwalk and a double set of large windows on the other wall facing Epcot! Also, once we figured out where we were, we realized we had a stairwell next to us that provided much easier access than the elevator and walk. Additionally, the room renovations are complete and ours was in perfect condition.

The holiday decorations were up and very nice. Nothing overly impressive but still beautiful. I liked the understated elegance of the lobby. We also loved the convenience of the Yacht Club's location. We didn't like the BWI very much because it seemed too busy over there, but the Yacht Club has the same convenience of location without being right in the hustle and bustle. The pool was a lot of fun. I think it is the most fun of the any of the resort hotels, however I do think that it is overhyped on these boards. We enjoyed the pool and the slide very much nonetheless.

Since this is already a very long thread, I will write a separate one on the GF. But just quickly I will sum up why the Yacht Club surpassed the GF in our hearts and minds...

1. Location--I love the MK and feel nostalgia for it, but the truth is the monorail was a mess during our stay--constant delays, and the convenience of being able to walk to Epcot, MGM and the Boardwalk couldn't be overlooked--especially late at night.

2. We had some really bad weather--torrential rain and tornado warnings which caused me to suddenly realize the inconvenience of the Lodge buildings at the GF. There were lots of times, I wanted to go to the lobby, but the weather was just too bad.

3. Parking. I am all for valet parking, but the lines at the GF were always very long. To add insult to injury, the self parking is across the street and a very long walk. We like to drive to the parks and this proved very inconvenient for us. The self parking at the Yacht Club was much faster.

4. Renovations. Our room at the Yacht Club was in perfect condition, having just completed refurbishing. The GF room was in good conditions, but was showing some wear and tear. Nothing major and nothing to complain about, just a difference.

5. Only 1 hot tub at the GF and it was always full with a lot of little children. The YC has several of them spread throughout the resort.

6. There were a lot of little children and strollers at the GF and I have nothing against children, I mean I went to Disney, what did I expect? Just at the GF there were tons and they seemed to all be screaming at the top of their lungs anytime we were in our room morning, noon and all night long, and the bigger problem was we could hear them from our room--constantly. There seemed to be more couples at the YC and that made us more comfortable.

We still love the GF and the GF has plenty of pros, but for now the YC is our favorite!

Just curious, did you walk over to the Beach Club? If so, how do you think they compare-advantages and disadvantages of each? Recently I stayed at BCV for the first time and had the same response to it as you do to YC. Now I wish I'd walked over to YC and looked around. But somehow I'd get as far as Beaches and Cream and stop there!

Welcome back!! I took several strolls over to the YC/BC last week and it was definitely a place I'd love to stay at. It was so beautiful. DS and I enjoyed eating ice cream while sitting in a chair on the beach and viewing some fireworks from Epcot on the dock for the boat ride.

dmen--I'm the same as you.

I never thought I could like a resort more than WL...but, after staying at YC in June...I fell in LOVE!!!!:D

We joined DVC in March and I was disappointed we couldn't get VWL, only BCV. After staying at YC, I am thrilled.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are not alone! dh and I used to LOVE the GF! we stayed there 4 times in a row, and then we started staying at other resorts... Polynesian, BWV, AKL, and the YC. the YC won our hearts completely!
I just love the atmosphere at the YC, I feel the same as you.

glad you had a great trip!

Laura :)

thank you everyone for your kind replies. it is nice to know so many of you feel the way i do! as for the beach club, i like the look of the yacht club more on the outside as well as the lobby, plus i like the nautical decor. it was understated, but still felt elegant. we also loved having a full balcony and know that wouldn't be guaranteed at the bc. the bc is, however, a much closer walk to epcot which is plus! my feeling was if we ever get a dvc, i would want it to be in BCV or VWL but if i am choosing a hotel, i would want YC over BC. that maybe an unfair statement though, since we didn't stay at BC!

I totally agree! :) The YC is amazing and my new favorite deluxe resort. :)

The Yacht Club is our new favorite resort :D, too! We had an absolutely perfect stay there last month. When we get a chance to go back to WDW, YC will definitely be our first choice.

dmen, I have to agree with you 100% on the Grand Floridian and children.

Yes, it's WDW, and yes, the GF is right next to the MK, but on our first (and possibly last) visit to the GF, we were overwhelmed with non-supervised offspring of indifferent parents.

I particularly remember little Jake. Of course, I remember his name because his mother used his name at least 1 million times during my 5 minutes stay in the hot tub. "Jake quit jumping into the hot tub." "Jake quit splashing the adults in the hot tub." "Jake quit fill in the blank." And so on. At least it was only 45 degrees during our stay, so when I went over the the other pool (with waterfall) I had some peace and quiet.

Given the price, luxury, and atmosphere of a stay at the GF over the Christmas high season, I was extremely disappointed at the inconsiderate behavior of the majority of parents at the resort. I certainly don't blame the children, hey a 5 year old is going to be a 5 year old. But lazy parenting which allows your 5 year old to ruin the good time of other guests is the pits.

Sorry about the rant, but I've been saving that one up for 51 weeks. Anyway, I agree completely with you regarding the YC, BC, and BWI. If you're looking for a great location and more ability to relax, that's the place.

We just returned from 7 nights at the YC & had a great time. We've never stayed there before so can't really compare to what it was like before, but we thought the new room decor was great. The layout seemed really spacious compared to the room we had at the BC 5 years earlier. I noticed they were completely re-doing several 1st floor rooms at the BC when we walked past, hopefully they will get the same treatment as the YC. All of the CM's were great, transportation timely & overall stay wonderful. A nice touch was the hot cider & Christmas entertainment in the lobby in the evening the last few nights of our stay. Mickey & Pluto also made appearances in the A.M.!

My husband and I stayed at the YC last Sept./Oct. and fell in love with the resort. We were in room 1036 and enjoyed the remoteness of the room and the convenience to the private pool and laundry room. Many nights we would sit on the patio and just talk, or take a late night dip in the pool, or hot tub. I was amazed that very few people used the private pool. I mean Stromalong Bay is nice, but it isn't that spectacular and we found it to be crowded, so the private pool worked for us. It was great! I like all the Disney properties, I think the themes are wonderful, fun and some are breath taking, but I don't think you can beat the location of this resort, or the relaxed atmosphere. We loved the resort so much we're planning on staying there again for our 10/04 trip. :Pinkbounc
