My love wants to go and play in the ocean for a morning since he has never been near an ocean.

How could I say no ?? :lovestruc Brilliant idea actually, I've been so caught up in the ADRs of planning and wedding details that it didn't even occur to me.

I understand that Cocoa Beach is 1 hour from WDW. Is the best idea booking a round trip taxi (ugh) or is there a better way to get there? ALSO, I couldn't find any info on if the oil spill is affecting that particular beach!

Help!

I have been to Cocoa beach and it is beautiful there. I would not take a taxi though, it will cost you a ton! Two years ago we took a cab from the airport to Universal, which is pretty close, and it was $60 each way! I would look into renting a car for the day. Most hotels have rental agencies right in the hotel. It would most likely be cheaper and more comfortable and easier to rent a car, that way you have the freedom to do what you want. You could also look into staying on Cocoa beach for a night or two. Tampa Bay is also another option that is near by and beautiful, but I know the oil spill is affecting the beaches there.

I live near Cocoa Beach. A taxi will be SO expensive, so you should just rent a car. You can get $30 or so rentals from Budget and the like at the airport. I think that would be your best bet.

No oil here because we're on the east coast. Hope that helps!

Tampa is about two hours the other direction. But as of right now, there's no oil in Tampa either. The oil is primarily in the panhandle area and has only a small chance of making it to Tampa, and certainly not by the time you come to visit! :)

Ok here is my advice / opinion :goodvibes: I would rent a car for the day it may be cheaper than a taxi. Disney has lots of options and companies you can rent from. I don't think that Cocoa beach is affected by the oil spill, how would i know living in the middle of Missouri  well I will give you the link to my Surf School LOL I don't own it but took lessons there and LOVED IT!! They also work for Disney (I'm sure you'll make the connection) Surf_School_link You can call them up and tell them that you were curious about the water conditions. Everyone there is soo nice and will be happy to help :). I hope this helps you out.

Happy Planning :beach:

just clicked on the link and when you go to fitness surf there is a serious hottie!!!!!!!!!!!! wouldn't mind being taught by him

there was also another point to my post which was that this could be a really fun group activity for your guests! i can imagine it being a good laugh watching your family and friends trying to surf!

This is a great idea. Good luck with it!!!!
Speaking as someone who lives in a country surrounded by seas and oceans, where you are never more than 50 miles (give or take) from the sea, it is unusual to think of someone never having seen it.
It would be another memorable thing to add to your wedding vacation for him!!!

As Cocoa Beach is on the East Coast of Florida and the oil spill is in he Gulf i.e. West Coast of Florida it is highly unlikely that it will ever be effected by the oil spill, but I guess there may be a remote chance someday.

I agree that the best way to get there is by renting a car, most hotels have rental car agents and Disney has a car care center on property that you can pick up a rental car. Enterprise will also pick you up and take you to there rental car offices.

The Kennedy Space Center is also close to Cocoa Beach which is a great place to visit.

I would also ask your question on the best way to get to Cocoa Beach on the Transportation thread here on the DisBoards someone over there may have some better or alternate information.

Cocoa Beach is great! I have tons of family all around there and every time we go to WDW, we take a trip to the beach. If you go, you must stop in at Ron Jon's, its huge and everyone who goes to Cocoa Beach must go at least once!
Have a great trip and congrats on the upcoming wedding!

I was looking at public transportation and there are a LOT of buses - more than I expected. However, none seem to go near/around Cocoa beach. I'm stumped. For the drive from ASMu to Cocoa Beach and then a return trip 2 hours later, one company quoted me $180!! :lmao:

If taxis generally cost $40 for one hours drive (or so) wouldn't it be expected that we could take a taxi there, stay for a few hours, then taxi back to the hotel for another $40? But still a lot of $$.

I guess we COULD rent a car but honestly we are just trying not to. I drive a lot for work (4-6 hours a day on road trip days!) and my fiancee is a professional driver... need some more creative solutions please my creative DISers!! ;)

As someone who lives near Cocoa Beach and frequently travels to Disney (once per week), there really is NO other way to do this.

A taxi is very expensive or you can drive with a rental car. The bus wouldn't go to Cocoa because Cocoa is in a separate county (we have county bus systems down here) and the trip would take hours. And there's nothing really along the way from Kissimmee to Cocoa, just farmlands and trees, so no towns or anything that buses would naturally stop in.

There are more pricey solutions (you could fly from Orlando to Melbourne airport for example) or a private limo, but those are pretty much your only options. If I knew of a better cheaper way, I'd do it for sure!

I did see some bus tour options just now that would pick me up at our WDW hotel and take us on an airboat tour and then an afternoon on the beach (Cocoa or Clearwater) with lunch included for $56 per person. Has anyone heard anything about these tours, it might be a wicked good option! :thumbsup2
