I miss it already!!!!

We checked in about 1 pm on Friday. I had heard on this board that soemtimes they offer an upgrade to concierge for $50 but when I mentioned it to the CM checking us in he almost laughed in my face! We had a pool view room reserved, so maybe they only offer that $50 upgrade if you are reserving a higher priced room. Anyway, we were given a complimentary upgrade to savannh view. We had room 3377 on the Kudu Trail, inside savannah view. I am surprised we were given an upgrade, because we were told by the bartender that night that the hotel was at 99% occupancy. But I must admit, the hotel did not feel uncomfortably crowded.

Personally, I was not crazy about the savannah view and I almost feel I would have preferred the pool view. Please understand, this is just MHO and I am almost embarrassed to say that. My DH says I am crazy to feel that way. We saw zebra and giraffes out the window, but when there were no animals around it was just some trees. No big deal. But I discovered the pool is open 24 HOURS...so maybe it was a good thing we were not subjected to all the late night horseplay in the pool. But I definitely would NOT pay extra for savannah view.

There are fridges in every room now, and you can request a coffee maker from housekeeping, which we did.

We ate at The Mara (counter service at AKL) when we arrived and we were pleasantly surprised. I expected just plain food but I had an African Stew served in a bread bowl. It was great! Lots of curry and cumin in it, and chunks of meat. I also had a split of chardonnay. DH had fish and chips (boring! But they were tasty) and DD6 had chicken strips. The sad thing is, we ended up spending $41 there! Dh got a beer, plus we got a sandwich to keep in the room. I think my stew was $7.69. I highly recommend it!

We went to the pool and it was busy but not overly crowded. We got chairs in the shade next to the slide which was perfect, because that is ALL DD wanted to do.

We went to Epcot that night and ate at Restaurant Akershus which was unique and delicious. I wo=ill definitely eat there again. Stayed for Illuminations but the loud fireworks TERRIFIED DD, which is weird cuz she is not one of those scaredy cat kids. I mean, she was in TEARS!

Hi we were just there also. We stayed 11/15-11/17 and then went over to the yacht club for the rest of our stay. Surprised to hear it was that crowded. It did not feel like that to us at all!!!
Maybe the crowds came in after the 17th when we left. We thought it was so quiet. I sort of feel the same way you do about the savannah view. When we moved over to YC I loved that view!!! I was kind of bored with the view at AKL since the animals did not come out much for us.
Pretty resort though. I loved walking around inside and outside.

Saturday was dedicated to AKL...all day long! We had breakfast at Boma...WOW! I wrote a review on the restaurant board. If I knew how to provide a link I would, and if anyone wants to do it for me I would appreciate it!
At 11 a.m. DH and DD did some sort of "animal tracking" activity outside. DD enjoyed it, but DH said it was no big deal. He said do not try to schedule it, but if you happen to be around at that time, then by all means, go ahaead. I wanted to do the daily cookie decorating at Boma at 1 pm but the timing didn't work out.

My cousin, who lives in Orlando, and her DH and 2 boys (ages 4 and 7) came to spend some time with us by the pool. We did not swim (she and I) but our DH's did with the kids. Again...it was ALL ABOUT THE SLIDE! We got the same chairs as the day before and had a lovely time. The hubby's went to the pool bar to order 2 beers. Well, as they were drinking them, a CM came over to my DH and was talking to him kind of low. I thought we were in trouble for something. But he told my DH that the beer at the pool bar was $5 a cup...or we could go into the gift shop and buy a 6 pack for $9.60! I thought that was very nice of him to tell us...he was a janitorial type CM. So my DH promptly sent me marching into the gift shop to buy beer. He said he never was so glad to spend $10 on a six pack of Bud!

We said goodbye to our guests at about 3:30 and I quickly changed and went to the Culinary Tour of Jiko and Boma. This was excellent as I am all about the restaurants. The gave us samples at Jiko of 3 dips with 3 types of bread (I "think" on the menu this app is called "Taste Of Africa.) Then at Boma we were walked thru every item on the buffet line. I could tell this was going to be my kind of restaurant! Excellent, exotic food. My dinner eview is on the same thread as my breakfast review, so check it out! At the tour they gave samples of soup and also those DELICIOUS Zebra Domes!

The tour wrapped up in about an hour, and I went back to the room where DH and DD were napping. We got ready and took DD to Simba's Cubhouse at 6:30. It costs $10 an hour and it includes dinner. We picked her up at 9 pm and she did not want to leave. The do arts and crafts with them and really keep them entertained. If it wasn't $10 an hour I would leave her there all night! LOL!

While DD was at the clubhouse we had drinks at the bar at Jiko. I had a dirty martini and DH had Makers Mark (bourbon) on the rocks. We then moved on to Victoria Falls lounge and had another drink, plus the "snack mix with afritude" for $2.99 that was mixed nuts with wonderful spices on them...the main flavor was cumin. We then went to dinner where I had one of the best dinners I have ever had on WDW property. I also had another dirty martini and DH had a beer. Again, please see my review on the restaurants board.

After we picked up DD we went to the arcade which was a blast. This resort just has so much to do! I am STILL angry at myself that I did not take advantage of the gym facilities (they are FREE! And beautiful!)

*sigh* If anyone is still reading...I wil be shocked! LOL! Sorry so long winded, I just LOVE talking about my trip! can you tell? LOL!

Next morning I was bummed cuz it was time to leave already. We went to Mara for breakfast. I was not hungry (geez, I wonder why....I had two all you can eat buffets the day before! UGH!) so DH had a big bacon and egg and biscuit breakfast that totally filled him for $5.69.

We went to MK at about 11 a.m and it was PACKED! I mean, we decided as soon as we got there we would NOT be staying long! We rode the horse drawn trolley, saw the Cinderella Show at the castle and waited in line for 55 MINUTES for Peter Pan's Flight and then said "We are outta here!"

Oh..."It's a Small World" was closed for refurbishment.

We rode the monorail to GF and had a light lunch at Gasparilla's (counter service) and we were not impressed. I had a tabbouleh wrap....it was big but not particulary tasty. I did have two splits of chardonnay.

Oh, I forgot to add that we requested turndown service (thanks to this board) and it was a nice touch to have the beds turned down and chocolates on the pillows when we returned in the evening. I did tip the mousekeeper both nights...but alas...no towel animals!

I read on some other threads about the "turbo toilets" and it is SO TRUE! I am a light sleeper, and had a hard time because anytime someone in a nearby room flushed...I heard it!

This is a GREAT resort and even though my heart belongs to the WL (and my DH agrees) I would not hesitate to stay here again!

Thanks for reading and if anyone has anyquestions I would LOVE to talk about my trip EVEN MORE! LOL!

Mrsj-Yes, I agree, it did not seem too crowded for my tastes. But I saw on another thread that a guest was told the AKL was booked to 102% at that same time!

Great reviews! Thank you for going into so much detail!

Thanks for your report. I can't wait to get there and see it all for myself!

Thank you for your trip report. I enjoyed reading and see the lodge through your eyes. I have been home a month now and am so anxious to return.

In life we all have a special place. A place we go to when we are unhappy, in pain, or just can't sleep. I believe I have found my new "special place" :p

I agree. We will be there in 13 days. Cannot wait..

By the way what is Culinary Tour of Jiko and Boma? Can you explain a little bit about this. I am wondering if we should do that also (besides the sunrise and sunset safari).
