I am reading the book right now. I am about 3/4 down with it. Of course, the next step naturally would be to want to see the movie.

I went to IMBD and see that they cast Alec Baldwin as Campbell. WHY?? I am reading the book that is set in 2004. In the year 2004, the lawyer Campbell reflexs back to his high school days....15 years prior. I have a Campbell in my minds eye that is sooo NOT Alec Baldwin. Campbell is about 32yo... Alec is 51, and IMO, doesn't look a day younger, so he can't pass for a man in his 30's.

How much of the book is removed from the movie? Should I just forget that I even read the book when I watch it? Should I pretend it is a different story all together? (I already know the end is drastically different, but I haven't got to the end of the book yet, so please don't elaborate on that).

I think Cameron Diaz is too young to play the mother of a 16 year old dying of cancer the past 14 years. Sure, she is old enough to have a teenager, but this woman would look years older than her actually age. Cameron can play characters much younger..because she looks it.

Did the people who made this movie even pretend to attempt to match the book's characters?

Ok, ok, okay.

MAJOR changes have been made from book --> movie.

Definately finish the book first, then see the movie.

And yes, pretend like you haven't read the book before.

The casting wasn't too bad, actually. I cried in the end.

The movie is decent, but definately forget everything about the book, or you will hate it.

I totally had the same feelings as you....not at all who I would have picked. But his story line is week. There is no storyline with him and the ex-gf/guardian at litem....she just isn't in the movie at all.

Judge DeSalvo is a man in the book, and is played by Joan Cusak in the movie! I actually think she did a GREAT job in this role though, so it works.

I didn't mind Cameron Diaz as the mom character, but when they got to the court room cases, she just seemed so weak. She was a likable character in the movie, and not at all the way I perceived her in the book.
