My recent experience with MDE/FP+...from a "hater"

It's not a secret 'round these parts. I'm what most would call a "hater" when it comes to MDE and FP+. Since my first experience with FP+ I have been a vocal critic. I. Don't. Like. It. I felt it detracted from our trip last year so much that I vowed to not use FP+ at all for our trip this coming December. HOWEVER, there were a few things I knew we were going to need (like a FP+ for Soarin' early in the am so we could rope drop Test Track, and a FP+ for, God help me, the FoF parade...but more on that in a moment)...

Let me start off by saying, overall the process wasn't so bad. Certainly not as bad as the first time. Mostly due to the fact that the window opened at midnight like it was supposed to and the system didn't crash 5 minutes into the process (which it did last year). I still maintain that the system is clunky by design, though I understand the thought behind it (they hope uninclined folk will simply choose the awful times the system gives them when they first select their 3 attractions rather than give people the ability to SEE all the available times and pick what they want straight off the bat). However, I did get the attractions I was looking for, at times I wanted. There WERE FP+ for 7DMT, though we did not choose them as I think our passes would be better spent on a ride more worthy.

The thing I wanted most was a FoF FP+ and that KILLS ME because I think it is beyond ridiculous to even offer FP+ for things like parades and fireworks. HOWEVER...sigh...we never ever do midday parades because I refuse to line up an hour early in the hot sun/cold for them and for the most part I've found day time parades lame. This parade, being new to us still, seems to be worth making an effort to see but I still refuse to waste an hour of my time trying for a curbside spot. So FP+ it is, and yes, we were able to get one for it. Score!

I really wanted a FP+ for Fantasmic! but since we have a TSMM pass for earlier in the afternoon I can't get one until day-of after we use our original 3. Hopefully there will be some left at 5:30pm when our passes are done. Not holding my breath, and we only even contemplated getting FP+ because we're meeting friends that afternoon/evening and wanted to make sure we'd get in to the show without lining up an hour or two early.

So, in conclusion, from a bonafide hater, I would qualify this year's foray into MDE to be successful. I don't like the concept of FP+ and I still find the process clunky. Where things will really be noticeable for me will be in USING the system in the parks again. Last time I felt scheduled to death, but DH has been reminding me that we are not married to our passes and can simply not use them at anytime (which is silly, as someone else could have used them. With old FP we only pulled passes we intended to use). Honestly the true enjoyment of FP+ is going to have to come from me retraining myself to no longer think of Fast Pass like I use to...as our golden ticket/something of value. I have to retrain my brain to think of it as something far less...something totally throw-away-able.

Luckily, this old dog can learn new tricks. I think on our last trip I was "doggedly" trying to hang on to how legacy FP worked. There's been plenty of time now for me to get over the loss...mourn if you will...and now I am ready to, if not embrace, at least accept the new system and work around its MANY many flaws.

So from a hater, this time so far, I hate it less. :-)

I'm glad you had a good experience.
On our trip 2 weeks ago we liked FP+ and our Magic Bands. We scheduled them for later in the day which totally worked for us

About Fantasmic. I decided to go at the last minute during my last trip - late Sept. I wandered up to the area about 20 min. before it was due to start, the stand by line was - well - no line. I just walked through no wait and sat in the right had side about 10 rows down toward the middle. No fuss, no muss. Now it had been pouring rain most of the day and there was some pretty lightening in the sky, not over HS but somewhere over yonder and the show still went on. It didn't rain during the show so all in all a pretty good experience with decent seats.

Glad you liked it! I'd totally with you on the clunky aspect of the site (heck, all of Disney's sites!) - but you brought up a good point about why it might be clunky. Some food for thought for myself!

My sister has 8 going the day after Christmas through NYE, and they too got all the FP+ they wanted. So a success for them too.

I'm glad it worked okay for you. We went with a Fantasmic dining package to solve the FP+ issue but I get that that's not the best solution for everyone. The teenager has *finally* started having opinions on the planning process... 60 days out! Fortunately Mama Melrose was on his wish list and had a lunch option. We're happy with that.

I'm glad it worked better for you this year than it did last year! Hopefully the in park experience will be better too :)

I'm glad that your previous bad experiences are not putting you in a negative mindset about this trip. I think it's generous and helpful of you to post from this point of view. I can totally see your point that you've had to shift from seeing FPs as a coveted, valuable item to something you're willing to throw away if the over-scheduling bothers you. . . It's a strange concept. And since the name and *general* concept of FPs are the same, it's pretty tough not to think of it as the same product with a few changes, but rather throw out previous experiences and think of this as a brand new tool. I do think that may be one reason that new guests or non-users of FP- are more satisfied with +.

I hope your experience with FP+ in action is also better than last time. Have a great trip!

We used them in March 2014 when it was very new. I went in a skepic, and came out a fan. We return this March 2016 and I can't wait to see how the system has improved in 2 yeras.

As a IT Professional, I know that hundreds of "fixes" or enhancements have been developed in 2 years. New systems like that operate with 20-40% capacity at launch.

Thank you for posting this. This upcoming trip in January will be my first time dealing with all of this. And it's overwhelming, to say the least. I'm trying to stay optimistic though so I appreciate your honesty.

I think this is the big item for many of us. With the legacy system, you started collecting and using FP ASAP. Of course, that meant you were riding a ride later in the day, and that really messed up the whole system. SO - if we only followed the rules and rode during the proper windows, we would not collect as many, but still more than the current 3.

Now the decision is do I use my 3 early so that I can get a 4th (to a probable 2nd/3rd tier attraction)? Or do I wait until it starts to get busy before I book my FP? That is a big change from the legacy system.

Glad your experience was better. Hope mine goes well next month.

I hate the process and the concept...but having 3 guaranteed rides at the time of day we wanted really made our Christmas week trip last year magical. EXCEPT for when we needed to deviate from the plan. But it is what it is right?

I was a hater of the old FP system so no help there.

But, have you ever tried watching parades from Frontierland? I read it on here and couldn't believe it would be as great as people said and literally, there were front row spaces left throughout the whole parade!! I've always skipped parades too (honestly, they're much better in theory than in practice) but I'm a total convert to watching from Frotierland.

or Liberty Square! We had a front-row seat 30 minutes before the show in March. Got a fantastic view up close with the new parade!

If you can time it right, there's a crossover from the Tiki Bird/Magic Carpet area to Country Bear Hall. Last summer, we were able to slip through the crossover and into the Country Bear stroller parking area just as the 3 pm parade was approaching.

The kids got front row with a less than 30 second wait. Not too bad.

We've learned to hang out in an airconditioned shop until about 15 minutes before the afternoon parade, then wait near the end of the cross areas (where the rope ends up the side of the walkway) chatting with the CMs in the area. When it is time to close the cross area, we follow the CM with the rope and get a front row spot. No need to waste a FP+ for a parade, IMO.

We usually have two full days at EPCOT, but maybe we should try the RD/FP+ between Soarin' and Test Track next time. We could do each twice in one trip that way. I do love TT at night though.

I have watched parades from both frontierland and liberty square before. I will be happy when we can cross the FOF parade off the list!
