The vet put her on antibiotics (different med than before) for a chronic UTI. I gave her the first dose tonight and she had a bad reaction to it. She immediately began to profusely foam at the mouth. It was awful!! I felt so bad. :sad1: She's really old (almost 21). So now I have to see if there's something else the vet can give her. She supposed to be on this for six weeks!! I don't think I'd be able to give this to her twice a day for all that time.

:( Poor thing. I hope the vet can figure out something else.

Awwww, poor kitty. Hopefully you can get her on something else asap.

I can't believe your cat is 21, that is so awesome. Did you get her as a kitten?

Thanks.

She belonged to my ex-wife before we married. I got her as part of the divorce settlement. I know, weird.

Hi, I 'm a veterinarian in San DIego..and just wanted to reassure you that while your kitty truly HATED her new drug....the foaming is a reaction to the hideous taste. Cats will salivate like mad and fling their heads and make all sorts of mouth motions....don't like bitter medications!! So...not an allergic/dangerous reaction.
That said, hard to put yourself and your kitty through that twice a day. Can you give pills? Sometimes awful tasting meds can be formulated to fit in capsules...sometimes giving a water "chaser" following the nasty stuff can help. (just load up a 3 or 6cc syringe.)
Kudos on her long life. My oldest was just shy of 23 when I lost him. Still miss that cat!!
Good luck!

Thanks! I'll check with my vet to see what the alternatives are. I can probably do a pill. She's not as feisty as she used to be but she is a bit frail so I don't want to hurt her.

That is really helpful to know! I can only imagine how freaked I would be if one of my cats started foaming at the mouth after giving meds...I would think it was an allergic reaction too. Thanks for the info!
