My son (18) goes to school near my mom, and they are both driving up here together for the holidays. He just called to tell me where they were AND what happened last night when they left. They were packing the car at about 3:30am and DS absentmindedly sat his backpack down next to the car while they were loading suitcases. They both went back in to get something and he forgot and left the backpack (with his laptop and Ipod and mini DVD player) by the car.

They came back out and he remembered it and started looking for it. As they were looking through the car he halfway noticed a guy walking down the street. After looking through the car they still couldn't find the backpack and DS remembered leaving it on the driveway and realized the guy must have stolen it. So instead of calling the cops, he jumped in his car to look for the guy:scared1:(yes, I know that was exceedingly stupid and I-plus everyone else- have yelled at him for it.) He saw the guy sitting in front of a house with a bike and HIS backpack. So he jumped out of his car and started screaming at the guy to give him his backpack back.:headache: My son is not a fighter so I have no idea where he pulled this from. The guy gave him the backpack and DS got in his car and went home. When he got home they realized it not only had his stuff inside it, but now it also had several GPS systems, car stereos, a camera, two debit cards and five different packs of cigarettes. Then they called the police. (not exactly the order I would have done things, but I wasn't there.)

But that's not the end. While they were on the phone with the police dispatch, the guy came back down the street and he had a friend! The dispatch told them to get in the house so they went in and the men came to the door and started pounding at the door and yelling. My mom called the neighbor across the street and he came out with a gun! The two men ran away right as the police drove up. They tazed one of them, but the other man got away.
It's CRAZY!

I have mixed feelings. I am furious that he put himself in danger, but a little proud to that he took care of himself (in a way). Also freaked out that it happend at all.

They were at your mothers house??
I would be worried about the fact that they know where she lives now...

OMG...

I am very worried. We think we know who it is. There is a trashy family that lives down the street. The dad is a few years older than me. They moved in with his dad about 20 years ago and were so awful the father finally gave the house to them and moved away( across the country). They are drug users and their kids are delinquents. We think the kid that got away was the oldest of the clan. A few years ago their pitbull attacked my mothers dog and they were fined several hundred dollars. For months after that they drove by her house very slowly staring at her when she was in the yard. There was nothing the police could do.

First of all, I'm glad your son is OK.

Secondly, this is the second story I've heard this week where a student has left their luggage near their car and had it stolen via walkoff. In both cases so far, the phrase, "I just went back inside for a minute" have been heard. I'm not sure where kids are getting the idea that they can leave their property wherever in public and nothing will happen to it. Especially in this economy.

As my DH frequently tells me and anyone who will listen, never leave anything you don't want stolen unattended even for a second. It may not be fair or just, but it is the world we seem to be living in right now.

Glad to hear both your son and your mother are alright.

OMG am sorry this happened to your family. I know your son shouldn't have done what he did (yes I have to put that as a disclaimer) but when the adreneline is kicking in you just never know what someone will do to protect family and possesions and to be honest I think he was a night in shining armor :) (just without the shining armor lol). Your mom sounds like she had a good head on her shoulders too!

Glad to hear they are okay. He did what his instincts told him to do. So glad he was safe! That was incredibly brave of him. These people do need to know that we won't stand for them doing this to us. I know it is scary, but we have to stand up to them at some point.

If I was you I would call the local police dept. and have them watch your mom house while she is gone esp since they watched her pack.

Gosh I would be so terrified that they'd come back to your Dm's house again!

I would, at the very least, as the police to drive by your mom's house frequently, especially since this person saw them packing and knows no one will be in the house for a while.

I would also make sure mom gets some kind of alarm installed ASAP so she feels safe when she gets back.

So glad everyone is okay. Sometimes in a situation like that, you don't think, you simply react.

Hope you all have a happy, healthy and safe holiday together!

They have already notified the police vacation patrol ( I'm not sure of the details on that program) and the officers that responded last night said they will make sure a patrol car does a drive by every night. The neighbors also are going to turn different lights on at night and she has a friend that plans on staying there next weekend. Hopefully that will deter them. What I really hope is that the man they caught gives up the other guy. I want her to move out of that neighborhood.

While he probably didn't handle things the "by the book way", you should be very proud that he stood up for himself. Good for him and I am so glad that the guy wasn't armed. With one of the two of them loose, they will probably find the second guy through a plea deal from the first.

Thanks. I am proud of him. He and my mom are close and he is protective of her.:goodvibes

Oh my heart skipped a beat reading that. Thank goodness they are ok. And I hope the police deal with the thieves quickly. Proud of your son for sticking up for your mom and himself!

Glad he's OK, but whatever happened to if someone steals something, or threatens you and asks for your wallet, aren't you supposed to just give it to them? A laptop, ipod, mini DVD player are all replaceable, a person isn't. You never know if this guy could have been armed. Granted, I could see how you would be sorta proud of your son, but please remind him that if he is ever in that situation again, it is 100 times better to call the police and cut your losses than to risk your life over some electronics.

Sometimes in the heat of the moment people don't think properly.
About 10yrs ago I stopped at A gas station around 2am and 3guys were giving this teenage girl A hard time and they followed her to her car.So not thinking of my own safety I pulled A golf club out of my truck and was ready to do some damage.Lord only knows what of would happen if I didn't.I waited for the cops and when they pulled up there were ready to shoot me and the guys got away. But the girl was safe. The cops thanked me and also said that was stupid.

I already spoke to him about it (as did his Grandmother and his girlfriend and his grandfather.) But I'm not going to harp on it. He reacted on instinct and adrenaline. He knows it wasn't a smart move but its over.

That took guts! I'm glad he is okay. I hope they get both of those guys and they stay away from your mom's house. That's scary.

SCARY indeed!
SO glad that your son and mom are both okay! :grouphug:

In todays time, many of those "drug dealers' use guns and knives and other illegal items and this situation could have had deadly consequences, thankfully it did not!

You mentioned someone else staying at moms house, be sure THEY know to be aware of any potential issues, perhaps they should NOT stay there alone for now????

Best of luck...too bad she has to live there with those types of people who live so close and have already impacted her life before and again.......:sad2:
