Myself Male 26 year old Disney Nut
Kristen Female, my 29 year old Fiancée and fellow Disney Nut
We were in the World from 10/16/02 through 10/23/02 and had some fabulous, some great, and some just OK meals. Here is a run down of where and what we ate. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Steak N Shake Offsite, Lunch: If you have never had a good old fashioned burger, fries and shake before you need to try this place. The burgers are thin and use sirloin steak for the meat and the fries and shoestring style. They have locations all over Florida and one right by the exit of Downtown Disney. Just turn left when exiting. The place is open 24 hours a day and is extremely inexpensive, for two hearty eaters with tip it was around $15-$16. My personal favorite is the Frisco Melt Platter. I usually order the fries and baked beans, but dont miss the chili. It isnt very spicy, but still has a good deal of flavor and is packed with meat and beans. Our favorite shake is Strawberry, please tell me if you can find a better one because this thing seems like you died and went to heaven. 4 Stars
Boardwalk Big River Grill Boardwalk, Dinner: We went here because it was the first restaurant we passed when walking back to the hotel after a late night at MGM. The best thing about this restaurant was we were seated immediately. However, the food was only OK. I had the Hazelnut Crusted Chicken and Kristen had the Grilled Chicken Skewers as her meal. The sauce on my chicken was pretty sweet, but I felt the chicken breasts were a little on the thick side for this dish and the potatoes were flavorful and plentiful. Unfortunately Kristens Chicken Skewers werent as good and she described them as Chinese Food Chicken which depending and where you are from, know what I mean. Some of them were also grilled a little too long. The good thing about the meal was it wasnt too pricey at around $30 with tip. 1 Star
The Land Bakery Epcot, Breakfast: We were both a little hungry and just looking for a snack rather than a full breakfast so we split a chocolate chip muffin and a large chocolate milk. The muffin was marvelous, moist and full of chips. The chocolate milk was great too, but I made the unfortunate mistake of looking at the nutrition label, do yourself a favor and just enjoy it without worrying how bad it is for you. It was around $4-$5. 4 Stars
San Angel Inn Epcot, Lunch: This is one of the most romantic restaurants in the park with dimly lit tables overlooking the water no matter what the weather is outside. We got a table close to the water after being seated immediately. Unfortunately this was only 1.5 hours after our chocolate filled breakfast so we werent too hungry. I probably would have been happy with just chips and salsa, but ordered some Tortilla Soup. Kristen got the Mexican Salad and we shared. Both the salad and the soup were average; we have eaten better versions at our local Mexican Restaurants. Our waiter was attentive and did not treat us any differently despite the lack of food we were ordering. I did want to order a Margarita, but I was asked for ID that I did not have with me so I settled for water with lemon. Obviously it was our cheapest sit down meal at $15 with tip. 2.5 Stars
Flying Fish Boardwalk, Dinner: I have heard great things about this restaurant online so we were very excited to try it. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. It was the best meal we had on the trip and probably one of our best meals ever. Kristen and I are not real big wine drinkers so we ordered our usual water, Al, our waiter, brought us a plate of lemon and lime. This became our staple drink throughout the rest of the trip. Al was so attentive that every time he filled our glasses, he continued to bring us more fruit. I ordered the Lovely Soup and the Tuna cooked rare, Kristen surprised me by ordering the Salmon. She very rarely orders fish; she is more of a meat and chicken type of girl. The décor of the restaurant is very modern with a fish motif. While waiting for our meal we were served delicious sourdough bread that we completely finished. My soup arrived quickly. It was a potato leak soup with a hint of lobster flavor, Al described it was being silky and he was so right. If you could imagine eating flavorful silk, that would describe this soup exactly. Even Kristen who does not like potatoes had a taste and declared it being delicious. OK, she snuck more than one taste. After a couple of minutes our meals arrived and all we could say was wow. My tuna was rare as promised displayed precisely over a mound of wasabi flavored mashed potatoes. Kristens Salmon was equally elegant looking with the fish delicately balanced on a bed of vegetables. My tuna was moist and delicious while Kristens salmon was flaky and melted in your mouth. The portions were large, but not so huge that we had to avoid sharing a dessert. On Als recommendation we shared the Banana Napoleon. It was heaven on a plate; warm bananas smothered in caramel lightly stacked on crème brulee. We were stuffed when we were finished, but oh so satisfied. I believe the bill was around $80 with a hearty tip, but definitely worth every penny. If you have one elegant meal in Disney and enjoy seafood, try this restaurant. 4+ Stars
Mythos Islands of Adventure, Lunch: This restaurant is very unique with stone walls and water falls surrounding the exterior and some of the interior. I have been going to this restaurant ever since it opened and was always delighted by the service and quality of the food. My brother and mother who live in Florida joined us for our meal. We actually had to wait around 10 minutes to be seated which is rare, I thought the restaurant might be finally getting its due. However, after walking in we noticed many empty tables and feared that they may be understaffed which almost always effects service. The fears were concerned when our waiter arrived and he did not even go over any of the specials, we had to ask him specifically what they were. He was also very slow to refill our drinks and return with the check at the end of the meal. I would probably overlook the service issues if the food were outstanding as we remembered it, but as you probably guessed, it was not. We always start off with the corn and lobster bisque, which has always impressed us, but this time it was just good, not great. Kristen ordered the specialty pizza, which was very tasty, but the crust was burned on one side. I ordered a sushi sampler platter that came with a shrimp tempura roll, a California roll, and a piece of tuna. The bowl they give you for dipping the sushi into the soy sauce had a diameter of maybe a little larger than my thumb. It was ridiculous to have such a non-functional container for an otherwise essential ingredient. To top it off my small piece of tuna had ice crystals on it. After the meal, my mother decided to talk to the manager about our experience without sounding too negative. Well the manager almost bit her head off stating that nothing has changed in the restaurant and that the sushi is fresh so it could never be frozen. No apology, nothing. None of us will ever return to Mythos. No Stars
Jimmy Buffets Universal City Walk, Dinner: If you have never been there Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville, it can best be described as a Caribbean themed fun restaurant with a volcano, multiple video screens and Jimmys own tunes on the speakers. After a miserable lunch, we werent expecting much for dinner. Wow, were we surprised. Our waiter, Perry, truly made the meal. He was super attentive and accommodating in every way possible. Their crab and corn chowder was amazing, huge lumps of crab in a tasty broth, was instantly a hit. I had the combo fajitas and Kristen had a chicken and pasta dish. My fajitas was yummy, although if I got it again I would just get the beef. Kristen enjoyed her pasta, but said the chicken wasnt so great. We finished off the meal with 2 shots of some fruity concoction and got to keep the shot glasses, actually our waiter brought us two more to take home. Like we said, he was the best. No dessert for us here, we were stuffed. I think we ended up leaving $60 for the meal, even though the bill was close to $45. Look for Perry if you ever stop in this place. Service and atmosphere 4 Stars, Food 3 Stars
Tusker House Animal Kingdom, Lunch: By the time we were ready for lunch, our feet were screaming for a break. Tusker House provided a nice rest for an otherwise hectic day. I had the grilled chicken salad and carrot cake and Kristen had the chicken sandwich. My salad was excellent, very large with juicy pieces of chicken mixed throughout. Kristens sandwich and fries were both very hot and crispy. I know because I thoroughly sampled both. The carrot cake was unique in that it looked like it came from a rectangular pan instead of the usual triangle shape you get when slicing it from a round pie. No matter what the shape was, the cake was delicious. I highly recommend this place for an air-conditioned retreat from the almost always-hot Animal Kingdom. It was quite reasonable at around $15. 3 Stars
California Grill Contemporary, Dinner: This was the dinner that we were most looking forward too and also turned out to be one of our biggest disappointments and also most expensive meal. The food and the service were good, but after hearing so many rave reviews of the place we expected too much. We were not able to get a table by the window without waiting an hour, so we decided to take the first available one, which meant we were seated immediately. The view is breathtaking, especially at sun set. I kept looking all around to see all the different views the restaurant affords. We started off with the 3 cheese flat bread and the fresh green salad. Both were good and I ate most of the flat bread. Our waitress wasnt very personable, but she did go over the house specials for us suggesting a bunch of different choices and we took her opinion. I ordered the halibut and Kristen got the fillet which the waitress said you could cut with a fork. Oh, they give you outstanding Foccacia bread while you wait which was delicious. Well my fish was very good, but Kristens fillet was sub par. I kept joking that the fork that our waitress uses on the fillet must have sharp blades on the end because Kristen had problems cutting it with a knife. We decided to try the chocolate bread pudding desert, another recommendation from our waitress, and werent overly impressed with this dish either. I think the problem wasnt with the food or our waitress, I think we went into the place with such high expectations that it would have had to be perfect to full fill our wishes. It was around $110 with tip. 2 Stars
El Pirata y el Perico Magic Kingdom, Lunch: We discovered this place on our last trip and loved the large taco salad so we had to make a return trip. When we arrived near the counter, the line stretched back quite far and almost decided to go somewhere else, but we persisted and waited, and waited. There was only one register open and it looked like they were having problems in the kitchen. After the horrendous wait we received our food: 2 tacos and a taco salad. They were as good as remembered and it was nice to get off our feet for a while. Definitely check this place out if you like fast food style Mexican food. 3 Stars
Beaches and Cream Beach Club, Dinner: This place was packed when we arrived, so to avoid a long wait we sat at the counter. This place is reminiscent of an old 50s ice cream shop that included an old jukebox. I ordered the double with cheese and Kristen ordered the single with cheese. Please take note, these are not fast food style burgers, they are much bigger. I had trouble fitting my double in my mouth and I have quite a large mouth Because of how large our meals were, we had to skip desert. People say it is the best burger in Disney, I would probably agree with that, but Steak N Shake is better and cheaper and very close. It was around $20 with tip. 2.5 Stars
Food and Wine Epcot, Lunch: The food and wine festival is always a blast because you get to sample food and drink that you would probably never try outside the park. We spent around $55 total between the 2 of us so it wasnt a cheap meal, but we did try 2 wines and the beer in Germany. Highlights for us included the strawberry wine in the Florida pavilion, the duck in the I dont remember which one pavilion, and the cold sesame noodles in the China pavilion. Try everything and walk slowly. 4 Stars
The Land Foodcourt Epcot, Dinner: This was one of those meals where we were hungry, but did not want to go through the hassle and time of sitting down for a long dinner. I had the vegetable lasagna and Kristen had the barbecue chicken sandwich with a cookie. I really enjoyed my lasagna even though it tasted much better than it looked. Kristen liked her sandwich, but said it was a little too messy, for once I did not try it so I will have to take her word for it. We split the cookie and it was as good as we remembered I love those things. It was probably around $20 total. 3 Stars
Le Cellier Epcot, Lunch: This was an unexpected visit, we just showed up and they seated us immediately which was a pleasant surprise. Our hostess was from Quebec and had an interesting accent, but our waitress was from Ontario and had no accent at all, weird. This restaurant is very woodsy and cool, a nice break from the Florida sun. I started off with the cheddar cheese soup and it was superb. We both devoured the pretzel bread and even received another helping. I would have been really happy to just feast on the soup and the bread. However we ordered real food too, I got the salad with blue cheese and grilled chicken and Kristen got the grilled chicken sandwich. My salad initially came out without the chicken and our waitress apologized and disappeared back to the kitchen returning with a nicely grilled chicken breast to place on top of my salad. Kristens chicken sandwich was stacked pretty high on an English muffin and kept falling apart, but she persevered and enjoyed it. We will definitely be back for at least the soup and bread. It was around $25 for lunch. 3 Stars
Jiko Animal Kingdom Lodge, Dinner: This was our final meal at Disney and also the latest at 9:00. Here was another restaurant where I heard great things online so we were highly anticipating the meal. The restaurant is very nicely done with a small kitchen in the center where you can either sit or just observe 2 chefs preparing appetizers and salads. We had a table close to this area, but were too busy stuffing our face to notice anything. On our waiters recommendation, we started off with the African Bread Sampler that included 3 different kinds of bread with 3 different dips. We both had our favorite sauces and breads, but both agreed that the appetizer was a good start to our meal. Kristen ordered the chicken, which came in a strange looking domed platter, and I went out on a limb and ordered the monkfish, a new one to me. Kristens chicken was very juicy and flavored very well. My fish was mouth watering and prepared fantastically. This was not my favorite meal at Disney, but it was my favorite dish. If you have never had monkfish, you need to check out this delicate white flaky fish. Since I was going to pay with my American Express, I knew we were going to get a free desert so we asked our waiter to bring us the best one. He quickly returned with the chocolate sampler platter that included a chocolate bread pudding, chocolate crème brulee and finally a white chocolate mousse. I didnt love any of the choices, but sampled each one. I am also not a big chocolate fan. Kristen, however loved the white chocolate mousse, if she could have, she would have licked the dish clean. This meal was also pretty reasonable at $65 with tip. 4 Stars
That is it, I hope you enjoyed my reviews. We cant wait to go back and go to our favorites again and try new places too.
