If your mom can afford rent why not move in with her in a NOT o Over 55 place

That is not what im doing. I came here for encouragement and advice but clearly I came to the wrong place. The only thing ive read so far is omg you're on assistance. I just want to give my kids a better life in an area where I can eventually be self sufficient. I'm not going to apologize anymore for being on assistance because we need it.
why would you come to a disney board for information and support about moving with section 8 housing vouchers? Its like going to a Hershey Park board for information about WIC? makes no sense.

If you really want information about moving to florida try city data or another such website.

OP, so let me just say as a word of advice and this is from experience making all kinds of blunders, booboo's and mistakes. Moving to be "closer" to any "thing" in order to be happy rarely achieves it's goal.

It's sort of like shopping to bring happiness, sure for the short term you get that instantaneous high but after a while you come down.

You say you're "stuck" in this crappy apt in NY, believe me I understand, I'm a native NY'er but ok so now you'll be "stuck" in a crappy apt in Orlando. section 8, is section 8. In fact there was a great HBO documentary about poor folks who live right outside the magical world of Disney.

Moving next to Disney is not going to bring you happiness, anymore than a pair of shoes will bring me happiness.

I wish you luck in your move

I honestly don't know anything about that because im not moving to Orlando . Were moving to a surrounding county. I called the specific county im looking to move and asked them if they were absorbing out of state vouchers and I was told yes we are and to submit my transfer papers to my local housing authority. I than asked how long would the process take to be accepted/ begin looking for housing and I was told approximately 6 weeks.

Me and my mom are willing to be up to an hour away from Orlando .

You may have to be farther away than that. Is the realtor you are working with aware that the Section 8 waiting lists are closed for Osceola, Lake, Seminole, Polk and Brevard counties (the counties that "surround" Orlando/Orange County)? Some have been closed as far back as 2008. If she isn't aware of that, you might want to be looking for another realtor....one who knows about Section 8. I very much doubt that a Section 8 voucher from New York is going to jump to the head of the list, especially a list that's closed.

I totally recognize your depression as a disability. I have a family member who had to retire because of it. I understand that being able to work is a big step for you.

I understand wanting a better home for your children and a good education for them. I don't see the need to move all the way to Florida for it. Sure, you can't find anything in NYC, but there is a lot more of NY than the City.

What I don't understand is the need for Disney, being close to Disney, going to Disney. We waited to take our kids to Disney until we could afford to do so, which meant waiting several years for when we didn't have to pay for childcare anymore and then those funds were put aside for a vacation. My DH and I worked full time jobs and were practically living paycheck to paycheck back in those days. If we had to be on any kind of assistance, I can tell you, going on a vacation and buying theme park tickets would be the last thing on our minds. Getting off assistance would have been our main goal in life.

Believe it or not HM, I've heard of this a lot. People go to Disney and have those magical experiences and think that it extends to all of Florida. I know with the folks on public assistance my church works with , all have this belief that if they just "get" some where else, usually where they have happy memories life will be so much better. In Camden a lot of folks think Florida or Puerto Rico. Sadly they usually come back after a while when they realize that they are still poor and the same tools to overcome poverty will take work and sacrifice and the same issues they had in Philadelphia, NYC, Camden are the same ones they have in Florida.

I can't speak to the depression, I'm not a mental illness expert but I do know a bigger apartment in Florida is not going to change op's situation one bit.
Her realtor told her schools are better?? really, I've read Orlando public schools really struggle and many in poor neighborhoods suffer the same issues other public schools struggle with in northern poor neighborhoods.

OK - everyone has had their fun for today. It's time to shut this one down.
