My little Canon broke - suggestions pls!

I have a Canon powershot 1100 and lovedd it - the lens keeps sticking and will work 50% of the time -- was looking to invest into another small point and shoot camera.

I do have a Canon Rebel with 2 lenses that I love, but need more photo lessons with it - it's good for certain things, but to lug it around on vacation its a bit of a pain - I want a great small pocket size point and click!

I don't want to buy anything too expensive or less expensive that it doesn't take good photo's. I am thinking of keeping my Rebel for holidays and etc.

What do you suggest?

I am going to look at BestBuy today and see... would love something that had a great zoom.

Have you checked into Canon's loyalty program? You can turn in an old broken camera towards the purchase of Canon refurbished camera.

Also, what price range are you looking at?

I learned something. I had no idea about the Canon Loyalty Program.

Here is what I found on another site......I did not write the info below!


In a nutshell, the Canon Loyalty Program (CLP) allows you to trade broken/damaged cameras towards the purchase of a refurbished camera. (Sometimes you can even trade up to a refurbished body and refurbished lens.) The program is not promoted on the Internet, but you can find a lot of "buzz" about the program if you Google it.

The way that many people use the program is to take an old Canon P&S, or even purchase an old Canon P&S off of EBay, and call the CLP number to see what's available on the program today. (The number to call is: 1 (866) 443-8002, option "2".) The available bodies changes daily, so if what you want is not available today, call back tomorrow, or the next day.

When you find an acceptable refurbished body through the program, you may order the refurbished camera over the phone.

When you receive the refurbished body it should have a prepaid shipping sticker to attach to the box containing your broken camera. If you do not return the broken camera in time you will be charged the full refurbished price on your credit card. If you do return the broken camera in time you should receive a 10 to 20 percent discount on your refurbished body.

Check the Canon Direct Store to see what "might" be available. If, when you call the CLP, the refurbished model you want is said not to be available, but you see it in their store, call back and talk to another person.

If you want more details about the program, call the CLP number. (1 (866) 443-8002, option "2".)

The Canon Loyalty Program can change at any time.

The other thing to do is check out sites like DPreview.com for reviews of cameras. Also check out slickdeals.net for camera deals.

If you can find a Panasonic LX5 or LX7 in your price range they are great cameras. Maybe a tad bigger than a normal P&S (not that big though). You may also find a canon S95/S100/S110 on sale near your price range. Smaller than the Panasonics.

In P&S if you need to go lower price then I would stick with panasonic, fuji or canon...

Post back here what you decide and perhaps we can give better guidance. However the ones I listed at the top are very nice P&S camerass that exceed most every other camera on the market. WIth the exception of the SONY RX-100 which is more money and sits at the top of the P&S range.

Amazon has the S100 for 249.00. I know thats over your 200 price range but it is a good PS camera and shoots in RAW.

Also again call the Canon loyalty program and see what you can get the S100 for with your trade in. Through Canons refurbished store you can get the s100 for $229.00

Offered me SX40, SX260, ELPH 310 and ELPH 510, mostly 2010 and 2011 models..

Unsure what ELPH is - can someone elaborate?

she loves it. It was $99 everywhere and is rated well.
For myself, I bought a Panasonic Lumix ZS15 for $149. Rated well by lots of sites, including Steve's Digicams. We'll see. (Truly, this was a double heresy for this Nikon user! LOL)

The Elph is Canon's ultra compact camera. Very compact package. It might not have the zoom reach you want.
The SX260 is a litte larger but has a longer zoom.
The SX40 on the other hand has a 35x optical zoom but you sacrifice the size with it. It borders on the size of your rebel IMO

If they are all the older models, I would take the prices she gave you and then compare them to what they are being sold online for to see how much of savings they are. Also I would ask her for what the warranty is. For refurbished I think they run about 90 days where as if you bought it brand new it would be a year. So if the price she gave you really isnt that much less than what you can find online, that might be something to consider warranty wise.

I really don't want the size of my Rebel, might as well use that then.

I just want to replace my PS 1000. I don't own anything but Canon, well, that's not true, my son owns an Olympus for when we are underwater. It's a nice camera, but not for everyday/pocket/vacation throw in a bag type IMO.

I'd like to stay under $200.00 if I could.. I little bit higher is okay, but still trying to avoid the 'major' investment of a camera again.

The Canon SX260 is pretty good and you can find it for $190. It has a 20x zoom and GPS. The Panasonic ZS15 is also good, it has a 16x zoom, no GPS, and also sells for about $190.

Camera GPS isn't for getting directions. It's for tagging the pictures by location. Useful for some photo sharing sites, some photo organization software.
