My home insurance was cancelled because I have Dobermans

It sure stinks and it's unfair , I have only one and never had a problem with her. The funny thing is my insurance company found out because they sent someone out to do a re-evaluation and the person was so intimidated by the dog that didn't even get out of the car. The dog was tied up in the backyard and I was at home ( they sent me a picture of the house with my car parked in the driveway ) . I saw someone driving slow but I didn't know who they were or why, I found out later on. I told the lady that thieves will not get in my house unnoticed, she laughed and said I just must follow rules.
They didn't ask me when I got the policy what kind of dog I had, only if I had a dog which I said I did.

Here's what the real "kicker" is: most insurance companies are all linked to special data bases in which any new company you go to will be able to check the property address and see that you are being non-renewed for what is being classified as an "aggressive" breed.

Although I am sorry for your situation, I can understand why the insurance companies are doing it. What it all comes down to is the fact that people are filing lawsuits for just about anything they can think of looking for "easy money". Couple that with sympathetic juries that are awarding record-high settlements and it's a situation that is just going to get worse.

Find the address for the Insurance Commissioner in your state and mail them a letter stating you are being non-renewed and the reason why. Include any training records for the dogs as well as a letter of recommendation from your vet attesting to the docile nature of your pets. It would also be helpful if you had been insured with the company for several years and had little (if no) claim activity. They may step in and force your current insurer to "Grandfather" you if you had your policy before the ban went into effect. But be aware that this is may allow them to exclude paying any claims surrounding the dogs in the future.

Good luck finding a solution. Whatever happens, don't wait until the last minute and risk having your home uninsured.

I have read that the most dog bites are from shepherds. Have they ever considered that is probably the most common dog, period?
The only dog that has ever bite me was a dachund (sp). (Mean little tempermental devil)
We have two blacks labs. Luckily this did not seem to be an issue.
Both our dogs are Canine Good Citizens too. I thought if this ever became an issue, at least we have that paperwork to back us up.
Like most labs, they are TOO good natured.
I always thought it is not the dog breed (to an extent). It is more on how they were raised and cared for.
My brother has a chow and shepherd mix. You would think -- MEAN. He is an overly gentle dog.
It also matters if the dog is an alpha or omega.
My little one (that is actually half cocker/lab) is the pushy one.
Our 100 pound lab -- her only goal in life is to please and be petted and loved. Her name is Omega, as she is truly an omega dog.

It's bad for the generalization. That is like saying all 70+ years old seniors are senile.

For 11 years! We have NEVER had any claim activity. We have always owned Dobies. They never asked about dog ownership and we never offered info. We were "found out" because we wanted to get more coverage. The evalualtor had the nerve to come on my property with his 2 loose Shelties!!! Oh boy,don't get me goin'.......

At least they warned you, they didn't warn me of anything and we didn't change a thing, they just showed up out of nowhere.

We once had a neighbor report us for having a "unregistered pit-bull" (they must be registered as dangerous dogs in our county)

Sad part is, it was a 16 year old deaf, blind Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) that never left the yard and couldn't catch you to bite you if she wanted to...

I'm more afraid some children in the neighborhood than the dogs
