Just a 2am vent.

I would venture to guess that approximately a year ago (or so) after my first brain surgery, I noticed my hair falling out. Not where I had the surgery (lower back), but all around it and above it, etc. UGGGGG....My neurosurgeon told me that it went with my condition (Arnold Chiari Malformation) and that once all was taken care of, I would see a huge improvement.

Now, I had surgery for ACM May of this year. I had to wait for my health to improve to do so. Now, yes I had a LARGE portion of my head shaved, lower back part for this. It is now close to 2 inches I guess. However, the hair above it and all the rest is falling out AGAIN. I mean that I clean my hairbrush and it is FULL after one brushing. I wake up with about 50 hairs on my pillow. I have the same amount (or so) on my shirts.. UGGGGGGGGGGGG :sad2:

My Dr is away until next week, and then I am told I will get an appointment (by his secretary).

I am just so :upsidedow:sad1:about all this. Why now? Why when I finally am starting to look like normal person again, is this happening?

Just to say that I HAD the thickest hair possible prior to all of this. I know that it would not ever stay this way, but at 41, I think it is way too early.

I really am not asking for answers, and excuse any typos, errors. I am just drowning in self pity tonight.

I don't blame you. It will come back right?

My hair has always fallen out a lot. I've been to a dermatologist who diagnosed it likely being due to stress. Mine always comes back but I feel like a shedding cat sometimes.

Thanks. I just don't know if it will come back. It is endlessly falling out.

What makes it worse, to me at least, is that I can not do much to hide things. I have this hideous scar on my head/neck, so I can not put it up in a clip or something you know?

I have had a feeling for about 2 weeks something is not right, and this makes me even more leery. Something about instincts.

:goodvibes:goodvibesI can only tell you that my hair had fallen out for years, but I finally figured out what it was with the help of my GYN. My hair has been thin and fine for years, so I just lived with it. However, about 6 months ago it started falling out much more than usual and I became scared. I tried using Nioxin, which is a shampoo system, nothing. I was really afraid I was going to go bald.

I mentioned it to my GYN and she thought it might be due to menopause, which it does appear I am going into (I am only 43). But she tested my Vitamin D levels, I was was very low. I started taking the over the counter vitamin D3 and my hair has just about completely stopped falling out. I was amazed. Now my hair is still thin and fine (will always be), but at least I am not losing what I have.

May be worth a shot to have your Vit D level checked. Never dreamed I would have low Vit D as I am outside alot, but I did. Just remember that the prescription for Vit D is actually Vit D2, which is not absorbed by the body as well as OTC Vit D3. I researched and informed my GYN about this and she looked as well and told me to try the D3 first as we would see how it went. It has worked very well for me.

BTW, I take 5000iu of D3 a day.

I have a problem w/hair falling out also. My hair was never thick...but it got very thin for awhile. I know how awful it is to see a handful of hair in the drain after a shower. Also, I love to cook but feel like I must always wear my hair up when I cook from now on.

I take Biotin every day. I think it does help. I am also going to try Kristin's suggestion. BTW, I went to an endocrinologist and had a bunch of tests run and they found nothing...no reason. I think yours may be due to strees related to surgery. Also, maybe some meds you are on? Either way, I know how you feel. Sorry!

Thank you both. I had everything tested. I have PA, which is pernicious anemia. I have a shot every 2 weeks, and a monthly blood test which is VERY complete. But, you never know. I will mention this to my GP who requests such tests. I will have the Vit D checked.

I (according to my GYN) am not Pre Men. I thought maybe, but all results prove otherwise.

I guess it is just stress for now. It just seems to happen at the oddest of times. THen again, maybe it does not. Maybe my senses are right.

Sorry you suffer from this too

Oh, chicky, I'm so sorry you are having this to deal with too. I'll give you some of my hair. I have enough for 5 people on here. Hell the hair on my legs is enough for one small child at least;)

Big hugs my friend:hug::hug:

I lost a lot of hair and had thinning after an intestinal surgery. Stylist recommeded Nioxin hair products and they are a life saver, still using them. I find them at Ulta stores and it is no more expensive than any other salon product.

Do you have anything else like dry skin, feeling cold, being tired? Thyroid issues can cause hair loss too. Something to get checked at your next blood test?

 Thanks. THat was what I was like before. More hair than ANYONE. My kids now have it, and hope they NEVER go through this crap.

How are things with you and the break? Accepting any help :surfweb:

Yes to all of that. I have Sjogren's syndrome, and as I mentioned PA, so that are those reasons for that. I have had my thyroid checked VERY thoroughly before this surgery and after, due to the very quick weight loss.

Ah its still broken with a big raspberry pink cast. If Im going to have the cast, its going to look good at least!

Im trying to accept help. Someone brought me a dinner the other day and another person drove me to a work thing and today a friend is picking me up for the movie. I think Im doing pretty good at trying to ask for help.

I hope you feel better soon, my friend. If nothing else keep drinking. My husband told me there would be no drinking for me as crutching under the influence is a bad idea;)

Glad to hear you are going out and doing things. Nothing could be worse than stuck with the leg up, and at home :headache:..

Yes, I think tonight maybe some yellowtail night :thumbsup2 .. UP since 6, 3 hrs sleep, on my 4th load of laundry. Entire house is clean.

My plan is to swim/float for the next few hours, pick up kids. Whenever DH gets home from work tonight, the party is on :dance3:. A 3 day week for the kids, and a 2 day for him.

I will go to the Liquor Commission for 2 bottles of my favorite Vino. Thanks for the thought. I deserve it. :)

Take care of you doll. Crutching under the influence could indeed bring worse things. One is enough, at least at a time. :lmao:

:hug:to you mommasita! Definately follow those instincts!
Although you may be having hair issues, scars from surgery, let your inner beauty shine through! You are a very kind, caring person, beautiful inside and out.

, I am dealing with the same thing. I think i have combed out half my head of hair:scared1: and whats left makes me look like stewie:rotfl2:

I'll try extra Vitamin D. I was told to take vitamins but I don't remember that specific one being a focus.

Hang in there, ladies! I hear that this happens to a lot of people but the hair usually comes back.
