My friend just got back from Disney, starting her trip the day after Thanksgiving, with free dining, with her husband, six year old, and two year old. They booked the Caribbean Beach, as they didn't want to spend the money for Deluxe.
They checked in at Caribbean, said the room was awful, smelled muggy, moldy. Complained to the desk, who moved them to another room. By this time, it was after midnight, and although the room was still bad, smelled bad, lights coming in through the windows, sprinklers going off at 2 AM right outside the window, spent the night, complained to desk again in the morning.
Asked to change hotels: wanting either Contemporary, Animal Kingdom, or perhaps even Coronado, though they were hesitant to go to another moderate. Desk person said no availability at Contemporary, but Husband called on his own to Contemporary and found there was availability.
Here's where the Pixie Dust came in. Caribbean gave them a cab voucher to take to the Contemporary, where they were given a room with two queen size beds, in the TOWER!, and no upcharge for the room.
Now, I just came back from the Contemporary, so my friend knew how pricey those rooms were. They were prepared to pay the upcharge, but they didn't get one!
Keep in mind, Disney was looking at a young family, with two little ones, who will surely be repeat customers if they treated them right. Smart marketing, guys! The couple already have in mind to return in four years, when the youngest is the same age as the oldest is now.
Even though they had free dining, they upgraded to Deluxe, and did multiple character breakfasts, and maybe did two counter service, which they didn't enjoy. Next trip will likely be a deluxe dining again, even if it's not free dining.
So excited for them, and hope that other families out there get as pixie dusted as my friend!
