I was thinking about renting DVC points on my next trip.I have no idea where to start is there a thread somewhere? Is it really cheaper to rent Dvc points? How hard is the process?

I just really need to know where to start

Go to the Rent/Trade Board and read the stickies at the top of the board. That's the best place to start.

I just rented my points out for the first time so I understand what you mean about where to start!

Cheaper? Here's an example..

Rack rate for a 2 bdrm villa is $665 + tax to Disney :scared1: One of my renters is paying me $340 w/ no tax. Codes or specials could have reduced the rack rate, but DVC points are still usually cheaper.

There is a points chart linked above. Look at your dates, where you want to stay and you can see how many points it would take. Note the points are higher over the weekends and for different views and resorts.

You can look on the rent board for more info. It requires trust, but many people have had great vacations this way!:hippie:

It requires more work (and a healthy dose of trust) on your part, but it can often result in substantial savings vs. renting from Disney. That said, it is worth it to check Disney's own promotions during the same time---they can be competitive with point rental pricing, depending on unit size and season.

And, be sure you understand the differences. When you rent a reservation using DVC points, you do not get daily mousekeeping.

In addition, the reservation remains the owners and you will not be able to change or modify it on your own, the owner has to do it.

If Disney comes out with a deal, like free dining or buy 4/get 3 free, etc., those specials to do not transfer to a DVC points reservation so you would not be eligible.

And, most owners have cancellation policies that are a bit more restrictive than Disney.

But, having said all that, if you are comfortable with the differences, you can certainly save a good amount on a DVC reservation or booking that same room via Disney.

Good luck!

I'm in the same boat. There's a lot of info on here as well as a lot of differing opinions on how much research to do on the DVC member as well as how to pay. It can get quite confusing. I wish there was an easy, step by step, but I think it's different for everybody. I will tell you this, don't jump in without doing any research.

I just wanted to say that although I have only a little experience when it comes to renting points from DVC members...it has all been positive! I rented last year from two different members. A one night stay in a 1 bedroom at BWV and then a 5 night stay in a studio at AKV-Kidani. Both members were wonderful and very helpful and I paid less than $600 for the 6 nights total.
I've spent the last couple weeks trying to rent again for a weeks stay in November and became very discouraged thinking it wasn't going to happen because everything was pretty much all booked up! Well, I contacted one member who was offering 160 soon to expire points for a pretty good deal...unfortunately we just couldn't find 2 studios available for my time frame. To make a long story short...he offered a 2 bedroom stay for 8 nights at OKW for my family and I at 258 points (which was much more than we could afford) and knowing that, he practically gave it to us for probably just a little over what he paid for dues on those points (less than $6 per point). I know many are probably going to think I'm being scammed or that this must be too good to be true but I did my homework and enough research to feel that this is legit! It has just proven to me that there are some really great people in this world and that Disney magic doesn't just happen in Disney World!:wizard:
So for all those who are skeptical and worried about renting from strangers...you should be skeptical and you should always trust your gut, but as long as you do your research and take all the safety precautions and be aware of the "red flags" you should be ok. Believe it or not I believe MOST people in this world are pretty honest individuals with just a few rotten apples mixed in!:grouphug:

I rented my points for the first time, a couple of years ago. It is nerve racking experience for both sides. I was lucky to end up renting to a lovely family, who was so excited to be bringing her kids to Disney for the 1st time.
It does take trust on both sides, b/c both have much to loose. Make sure that you get your confirmation papers once required payment/deposits have been made.
I told the person I rented to, to feel free to check w/public records in reference to ownership, deeds for my DVC contracts, my ebay feedback etc.
I wanted her to feel comfortable and she wanted me to feel comfortable.
We are email friends to this day.
Go with your gut, if something doesn't feel right don't ignore it.
Good Luck:goodvibes
