My dd wants to take up the drums...should I worry??

Dd is 10 1/2 and has already tried the violin and the flute. Stuck with the violin for two school years and liked the flute but not enough to stick with it. Now, she says she really wants to try percussion!! Any of you out there have kids this age that have done it? What did it entail as far as equipment goes. I'm just not really sure this is the 'instrument' for her. Or am I just being overly concerned? Help!!

Loud.....DS has done trumpet and now onto drums. DD has played flute and is on piano. DH is musically inclined, I am not-lol. So the instruments will keep coming I fear.

My dd plays Saxophone & started in 5th grade. She is going into 8th grade band now and has no choice but to stick with it.

I guess what I am asking is there a band that she can practice with or is this on her own? It helps if they have a group to practice and perform with.

I want to get a drum set for DH one day. If you can afford it, I say go for it.

I think maybe she can start it in 5th grade next year. Otherwise it's private lessons at the town music shop. Man, I wish she had liked the flute. Sure would have been easy since we own one!!

I have a set of drums for sale.

My son started out in 5th grade. The band director gave him lessons, but I took him for 2 years to private lessons, because it is not just the drums they have to learn, it is the bells, symba's, chimes, base drum, snare drum, cymbals.

He would practice every nite from 6-7 while we all left and took a walk. He still would get on those things and play away, he loves the drums, but he graduated thank God.!

I was allowed to play the drums in junior high. Mainly because it was the only 'instrument' we could afford to buy. ONly had to buy a book and the sticks I loved it and played all through Jr. High and my freshman year of high school. I dropped because of inability to march in marching band due to knee surgery. My mom would absolutely NOT allow a drum in the house so I made due with playing on a practice pad and any other flat surface in the house!! LOL.
I say let her try. I think percussion in the bigger bands is a far cry from a snare, bass, and cymbals in the smaller bands

My son started out on drums in elementary school. Tried French Horn in 6th grade. He didn't like it. He begged his music teacher to let him go back to drums. She reluctantly agreed half way through the school year. After he switched she was glad she let him make the change. He's much better at percussion then he was at french horn. The practicing is not that bad. For the most part he uses a practice pad at home. Occassionally he will take his bells outside to practice. If outside practicing is not an option for us have your dd use the wrong end of the mallet to play, it's not as loud. As far as owning equipment, all we own is sticks and a couple practice pads. We do pay a small rental fee to the school for all the equipment. It's not that bad, go for it.
