My daughter joined the NAVY last week and she is leaving for Basic Training on June 23rd. She just graduated this past Sat. I'm in a whirlwind! It seems like everything is moving at top speed.

I'm guess I'm asking for some hugs and prayers for her. I'm SO PROUD of her! Even as I'm writing this I'm tearing up. My little 3lb 40z girl is growing up, and taking charge of her life.

Congratulations on raising a great daughter. I also enlisted in the military right out of high school (Air Force for me) and it was one of the best things I ever did.

I will say a prayer for her - basic is tough and depending on how long her tech school is after basic, she is likely to be deployed and that is tough as well.

I feel your love and pride, and as a proud Army Mom, I know the many emotions involved.

Sending congratualtions, good luck, prayers, thanks, and big hugs, to your daughter! May this be the beginning of many great things to come for her! :wizard:

Thank You All. My head is telling me this is the very BEST thing for her, but my heart is saying something different. She is following in her father's footsteps. He was on the USS FORRESTALL.

Curious how long will she be gone for?? Good luck to her. Is she taking a certain type of job, just curious how that works??

You should be very proud. My DD was interested in the military but took medication for ADHD in HS which disqualified her, according to the recruiter. In a way, I'm relieved but know it would have been good for her.

She will be gone for 8 weeks for her Basic Training. Lucky for us she will be at Great Lakes Naval Base (only about 1 1/2 hour from here). Then when she is done with that, she was told she has the weekend with us and then off to her school. She will be in Meridan, Mississippi for about 6 weeks. After she completes that, then she will get her orders on where she will be stationed. She wants either on a ship or overseas. She is a very strong minded person, and I think this will probably be her life calling. I think her job is going to be something to do with ordering and maintaining supplies. She is really good at math. She wanted to be a Master of Arms (police), but the job filled up and it would be Jan. of next year before she could leave. She is itching to get started.

Congrats!

She may or may not have the weekend with you after graduation. DS graduated and shipped out to California for his A school the same day. Graduation was wonderful, and will fill you with pride. The military does a wonderful job with ceremonies.

DS left last July. He is currently onboard ship. I haven't spoken to him since March, although we can email each other.

Best of luck to your daughter, you should be very proud of her.

First and foremost.. Thank you to your daughter for her service to our country.

I see that you added that she will be at Great Lakes. You already know that there will be days of high humidity and unbearable heat. Mississippi won't be a cakewalk either.. My DD (14 y.o. last summer) did a 9 day Boot Camp there last summer for the US Naval Sea Cadet Corp and lost 10 pounds.

They marched miles all over that base multiple times a day. It was only a small taste of what real Boot Camp is like but they were treated well and she did great. Make sure she takes her PT prep seriously and has her boots broken in if she can bring her own. The better physical shape she is in when she gets there, the easier it will be for her.

Good luck to her.pixiedust:

My husband is an ex Navy man. Thank your daughter for her service to this country. May she stay safe and be strong. You should be very proud of her. GO NAVY!

I'm a Navy brat, my dad was in for 24 years. If she wants to do something just a little different (and not be ship based) have her look into the Seabees.

Another former Sailor weighing in: Congratulations to your daughter. You have every right to be proud!!!!

OP I wish your daughter luck. I remember everything about boot camp and it's not fun. But she will get through it. Tell her not to bring anything with her of value. It gets shipped home and things get lost. Also from a former sailor to a future one, Congrats. Your doing your country proud.

I felt that way when my sweet little female cousin joined the Air Force at 18.

Today she has two degrees, has a great job with the Pentagon and is about to retire. I saw a flaky little girl turn into a woman I am SO PROUD of in 25 years!!

Give your little girl a hug for me!

I am so glad I found this post. I just found out a week ago that I leave on june 17th for boot camp. I am so nervous because it is happening so fast. I have no friends or family in the Navy either. I guess I am excited though too. Best of luck to your daughter.!!! I feel its a great decision.
