A few of my co-workers are planning a practical joke and I am not happy about it. One person here is deathly afraid of birds. So today when a few of the charming folks here were on their smoke break, what do they find?? A dead bird. They want to bring it in to the office and leave it on this person's desk!!! I don't want the thing in here, who knows what diseases, ticks, fleas, etc it has. We don't know why it died!! Plus this is the meanest thing in the world to do. I'm going to my supervisor. Fun is fun, but this is dangerous.

I don't know if any of you remember, but this is the same group that dipped tampons in tuna oil and left them hidden on someone's desk.

ITA with you! That's going too far.

WOW! What a bunch of winners that is. Sheesh. Unbelievable. Just needle them with little reminders of how the Avian Flu now, and the plague centuries ago, was transmitted.

I've been known to pull some cheesy jokes on people (like a toy snake I brought in and curled around some chair legs right after a baby snake was found in our building :sad2: ), but that's ridiculous.

I think telling the supervisor is probably warranted in this case.

Good Lord you work with a bunch of pre-teen losers. Tell them to grow the hell up. Do they have no clue how unsanitary not to mention how cruel this is???????? :furious:

Your coworkers had better be careful. This could be called harrassment or creating a hostile work environment.

Not to mention that there are some really scarry bird viruses out there now. I wouldn't be touching any dead birds!!

I would warn the co-worker/victim of the prank if possible and I agree with going to the supervisor.

These pranksters are cruel and creating an uncomfortable work place.

Who knows what this bird died of too, in So. Cal we have west nile virus and that can be transmitted to humans, plus in this day and age of avian flu this just sounds incredibly cruel.

Its one thing to joke around, but this is harmful :sad2:

That is disgusting. They need to grow up. I love a good practical joke, this is not one!

Its absurd. And disgusting.

With all the germs a dead animal would carry, in addition to the Bird Flu fear.... real smart on these co-workers part.

I hope your next post tells us about their Pink Slips. :sad2:

How old are your co workers?? I do think they are playing with fire if they were to go through with the joke.

May I ask where you work? I am curious to know where things like this are allowed to happen.

Seriously, Evil Genius, I'd like to see what becomes of this. Like CathrynRose, I think it'd be great if you post in here later about these idiots getting fired on the spot.

So I went to my supervisor and the others supervisor and spoke to them together. After I explained what was being planned and the inherent health hazard that this presents, I sat back and waited. After both supervisors picked their jaws up from the table, they thanked me for letting them know and asked me to leave the room. A little while later they came out and got the conspirators and back in the room they all went. They are still there. I know I will end up being the bad guy in all this and I will be ignored for weeks because of this. Oh well!!

Someone asked how old these people were. They range from late 30's to mid 50's. So they do know better.

Apparently, in this case, age does not have a very direct relationship with knowledge or wisdom. Let us know what comes of it.

Thanks.

So two out of the 4 co-workers were suspended for a week without pay. One was fired. The last one has been threatened with a demotion if this ever happens again. I don't know how much longer I'm going to last at this place!!

I'm glad to see your company took this seriously. A joke is only funny if everyone finds it funny - what they were planning was just plain mean.

I'm glad they took it seriously too. I followed the tuna oil story and was agreeing that HR should have been involved then.

I hope you don't feel bad about it, even if you do think they'll make you the "bad guy". Guaranteed you weren't the only one that felt that way, just the only one to have enough courage to do the right thing. And it's also a pretty sure bet that they hung themselves once they were in the Supervisor's office. Generally, a firing wouldn't happen just on somebody's word since they could have easily denied wanting to do such a thing and it becomes "he said, she said".

It's always harder to take the high road....I'm glad you did!
