My car that was stolen 15 months ago was found - update page 2

Good question, I have no idea how they figured it out.

Glad you got the car back
There are several areas that vins are on the car. When buying a used car always check to match. The easiest is on the door frame. If it has been removed that is not a good sign. there are more when you raise the hood and in tail lights. I can't remember every spot we learned, but there are multiple.

When I go out on insurance claims as an investigator now, I take a picture of the dash vin, the door frame vin, and match to the registration.

It was a good thing it did not get held as evidance. Sounds like a pro, someone with a sales shop had it, fixed it up and sold it. When it got the dent may have been a fender bender and insurance got involved it how they could have discovered the problem.

Stinks to be the party that bought it and out the money.

Curiosity question......so when it was originally stolen, did your insurance company pay you for the value of your car, and now you get to get your car back and you can sell it if you'd like--and keep the money?

sounds like if that's the case it worked out great for you!

The OP said in the third post,

"I just had the most basic insurance on it so I didn't receive anything from insurance."
