I am a little too excited about this but I figured if anyone would understand, it is people on this board. Today I froze the nearly gallon of milk that was approaching it's sell-by date. With just DH and myself at home full time, I usually buy a small container of milk, but with kids and other assorted guests here for the holidays I had bought the three-pack of half-gallon containers of milk at Costco. It still turned out to be too much, and so I decided to freeze what was left. (I used some mason jars and filled them about 3/4 full, so we can defrost and use a small amount at a time.) If this works, it will be a money and time saver -- no more running out of milk, or paying more per ounce for the small containers, plus I like that Costco has the whole organic milk. Like I said, I am way too happy about this!

When things go on sale or clearance, we buy and freeze too. We have frozen milk, chocolate milk and orange juice with good results. We just freeze in the original container usually, but I find your method interesting. Let me know how it goes.

I would watch the mason jars closely, sometimes glass will break in the freezer.

We often freeze milk too. Just make sure that you shake it thoroughly when you thaw it because it separates when frozen.

I grew up 45 minutes from the closest grocery store so growing up we froze everything. I should get back into that habit. Way easier and cheaper then constantly running to the grocery store.

Good for you! Just want to point out, that for some silly reason milk seems to take FOREVER to defrost in the fridge! So be prepared to have it in the fridge at least 48 hours before you want to drink it. Maybe the smaller jars will defrost a lot faster though.............P

So true about remembering to shake it! From my experience the glass only breaks in the freezer if you fill the jar too full.... just be sure to leave a 1" airspace above whatever you put in the jar. I make soup in batches every month and freeze it in glass all the time and haven't lost one yet!.................P
