My beloved Bulldog died a horrible death at Vets Saturday

:sad1: I'm so sorry for your loss! Losing a beloved pet is so difficult. Hoping you find a bit of comfort each day.

I am sorry for your loss. I have experienced something like that before only a bit opposite. Strangely, the situation was that we took our cat in to be put to sleep because he was dying of intestinal and pancreatic cancer. What I was not told was that in this country, they can't give an injection that stops the heart. They can only give something that slows the breathing. (I found this out when it was too late) In my book that is death by suffocation. I had put several animals to sleep, so I knew that under normal circumstances with the drug they give in america, my cat should have died before the injection was finished. Instead, we were told our cat was given enough injection to kill a 200 pound HEALTHY dog. Injection after injection. We said goodbye so many times. 1-1/2 hours later, our cat's heart finally stopped, but not before spending all that time on the table flinching like he was suffocating. The vet said he had never seen anything like it. His heart was just so strong.

It was so distressing that I became physically ill right in the room. I think I cried harder in that 1-1/2 hours than I have when a family member has died. I felt like we had tortured him. This cat was our son's best friend. He left the room 15 minutes into it because it became too much for him. I am haunted to this day about it and will NEVER tell my son that things went terribly wrong. Thankfully, he was in the car sleeping, so the amount of time that passed was not known to him. I would have rather have our cat die from the cancer than die the way he did. I will never put an animal down in this country again.

 to you. An unexpected death like yours is so very difficult.

That's awful. Don't they put them under anesthesia first? Technically, the drug that most small animal vets use in the US is an overdose of anesthesia (pentobarbital). There is a drug that will stop the heart, but it is used mostly in large animals (cows, horses, etc.).

I am so sorry, poppins and sleepy...both situations sound awful and I know how much it's possible to love an animal....actually, for me it's impossible not to love one that I get to know. I'm looking at my Pitt Bull/Lab mix sleeping on my bed and thinking how awful it would be if something happened to him.

My heart goes out to you and your DH over the sorrowful loss of your sweet Buddy. :sad1: He looks like he was a wonderful dog.

Wow, this is really shocking. And definitely a big deal. I'm so sorry. :hug

I'm so sorry for your loss. :sad1: A tragic one at that. Don't blame yourself, you did more for him than any of us could have as dog owners. I love bulldogs, they are so sweet! Your buddy had a good life with you.

Thank you for rescueing Buddy and giving him a loving home for the time he had. I know it wasn't long enough for you or your family. My heartfelt sympathy goes our to you.
Debbie

OMG :scared1: I don't even know what to say. What a horrible way to lose a wonderful friend/pet :(. No one expects to have to go through something like that when they get a pet. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your DH. I bet the ceremony your husband did was very moving.

I am sorry to hear of your loss of buddy. I know how dogs can be a part of the family. Buddy certainly was lucky to have a caring owner like yourself.

Adding my condolences. I'm so sorry for your loss.
