My baby's off to kindergarten - what do I do now?

But seriously, I do have plenty to do around the house, and I volunteer up at the school, and do a little substitute teaching. And I'll probably do more of that. I'm not idle, just missing my little one. I really wish we had half-day kindergarten instead of full day - it would have been an easier transition from preschool which was three half days a week.

The weird thing is this totally caught me off guard! I was excited to have some time to myself to get some projects done around the house, etc. I guess its just going to take some getting used to.

Well you will find out that it is not as much time as you think. You are lucky to have all day K. Half days stink imo.

I second the suggestion for volunteering at the school library. You may get to see your DD once in a while either coming in while you are there or walking past you in the hallway-they LOVE to happen across their mom while they are at school. I shelve books for about an hour every morning, and besides seeing my own boys once in a while, I get to see some of their friends. And just to let you know how they feel about you being around, my 11 year old starts middle school this year and I asked him if he wanted me to work in his new library, and if he liked seeing me there once in a while and he said, "yes."

I have also made some friends with the staff and I get a daily dose of adult conversation, which is nice.

I would definitely say to volunteer ! I am a Kindergarten teacher and I would love having some volunteers..I have one that comes in once a week to do some filing, cutting, sorting, etc..i absolutely love having her there!

Our grade school has a great open-door policy for parents who want to volunteer. I plan to volunteer in the Computer Lab for DD5's Kindergarten Class. I did that for DS's class... amazing how much a class of kids can keep 2-3 adults hopping during computer class!

My baby leaves me at the end of August! I am a wreck already. I work at home anyway, so I'll be able to get more work done, but still:wah

I'll be down to one kid home come fall.. I'm not looking forward to it..

same here.. but he will be in pre-k half day. Fall 2010 will be tuff when they will all be in school full time

I wish I got more volunteers in my room! I love it, but it is great to have an extra set of hands/eyes!!

My baby goes to K this fall, too. I have recently gone from working f/t to working 3 days a week, and that's been an adjustment in itself. I don't know what I'll do when I'm here by myself 2 days a week!

I'm planning to volunteer at the school and catch up on my scrapbooking.

i say use the time to get those projects done and get as organized as possible!!!

when my kids started k i was amazed at how much homework and how many projects they had after the first couple of months. so the time they were home they needed me much more available to them (in a different way than i was used to). where i was used to getting things done over the course of the day and evening, i now needed to get stuff done while they were at school so i could focus on those school related items (and activities-good lord the number of evening events and meetings floored me). then there was the physical shift of no longer being able to schedual their haircuts, doctor and dental appointments in the morning (and get them out of the way)-i learned quick that when these got schedualed for after school there was a HUGE increase in time (i never ran into doctors/dentist running behind schedule when i had those first thing in the morning appointments). SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-

funnel that separation angst into getting everything caught up and done-get the closets together, clear out the clutter, organize the pantry, find all the art supplies (and have them at the ready). then if you want to take a class or volunteer you've got the homefront set up.

if you're still feeling lonely without the little one-do what i did (still do when ds is at summer camp): turn on the tv in a room you're not in and set the channel to nick jr or disney or whatever they normaly watch-you might find that mentaly it gives you the impression that they're still at home but just watching tv in the other room.

I am right there with you. My youngest starts kindergarten in two weeks. She was in a preK program everyday from 9-1 so I guess it won't be that much of an adjustment. Saying that, I am sort of melancholy about the fact that my baby is old enough to start school. The time has flown by soooo fast. I know I will be very weepy on that first day! I plan to join the gym, volunteer at the schools and hopefully have a little more organization around my house. I worked part time last year at the preschool, but I am only going to sub this year, so I will have lots of free time on my hands. I'm excited! You'll be surprised at how busy you may find yourself!!
