My poor 10 month old daughter has had a fever since Saturday afternoon, when it got to 104.4 deg! Since then, it's been varying temps, but between 101-103. I took her to the doctor today, and the doc said she might have a urinary tract infection and they needed a urine sample. Well obviously, you can't ask a baby to pee in a cup. so they had to put a catheter in her... It was horrible! She was crying so hard, and she rarely cries. Has anyone ever had to have this done to their child? It was awful. But all i could do was hold her still and comfort her while they did it. And then, they had to draw her blood... well the nurse couldn't find her vein and had to keep digging for it, and you could imagine how she was crying by then!

The results ended up being nothing significant, and the doctor said it's probably just a virus. Thankfully she has no other symptoms, no sore throat, no ear infection, no rashes or anything. Just a stubborn fever. I just gave her Tylenol and she is resting now. What a horrible day for her!

Just wanted to share... I'm a first time mom, so I've never been through any of this.

I am so sorry you and your daughter had such a rough day! {{{HUGS}}} I hope that you both get some much needed rest.

I sending your poor baby lots of tender loving pixie dust and {{{HUGS}}}. I hope she feels better soon - and I hope you get some much needed rest and respite as well.

OMG, that's terrible. Poor baby!!! I can't imagine how frazzled you must be! Is she dehydrated? :(

I'm so sorry your baby is sick. It's really scary when they're that young and can't tell you what's wrong and don't really understand what's happening. You're doing all you can for her and I'm sure she'll be her usual self before you know it. Take care of yourself.:D

Oh I'm sorry about your sweet baby. There is nothing harder that I have experienced so far as a parent than having to watch as your tiny one goes thru a painful procedure....and not being able to take the hurt away. Good news that its viral! In a couple of days she will be good as new and no worse for the wear!!! Wish we parents rebounded that fast. {{{{hugs}}}

Poor baby! I remember my niece going through this, I think it was harder for her mother than it was for her.

Sure hope your baby gets better real soon!

I totally relate. My own DD had a horrible time with recurrent urinary tract infections as a baby. They started when she was about 7 months old and continued until she was about 8 years old. But as a baby, they were really bad - just like you said, getting the sample is just awful. I recall the advice being not to put the baby in a bathtub with soap bubbles or any kind of soap. That tends to bring the infections on. In our case, the infections just came on anyway.

By the time DD was 4, she was pretty good at peeing in a cup on her own, with me holding the cup under her. It unfortunately, became old hat to her.

She is now 14 and hasn't had one of these dreadful things since 2nd grade - I guess she had to outgrow them.

Best wishes to you and your baby girl - hang in there.:D

(((HUGS))) I'm so sorry! I hate it when Daniel is sick. I'm a first time mom, too, and was lucky that for the first year he was fine, but for the past 6 months we've had ups and downs. Teething didn't help, either.

I skipped the blood draw from his 12 month appointment...made Greg take him. I just couldn't bear it. When Daniel was 1 month or so his ped. wanted to have an x-ray done and an ekg to check something out. All was fine, thankfully, but for the x-ray they put him in this horrible torture-mummy-device. Greg stayed in the room, but I stepped outside (only 1 was allowed in, and since I was breastfeeding I figured he could do it). I can still hear the screams! It seemed to take forever, but I could hear it all thru the door. Never want to do that again.

I hope your little sweetheart is well soon!

How awful for both of you :(

When my DD was 6 mos old, she had a fever of 104 that spiked really fast and when I brought her in they told me she had a double ear infection and conjunctivis...I felt horrible as a first time mom too.

I'm hoping she's feeling much better real soon...hang in there :D

I also had to stop any type of perfumed soap or bubble bath for my DD due to irritation and infection. She's 11 and still uses "Dove", perfectly safe for baby too.

(((hugs)))

It happens to most of us at one time or another and it doesnt get any easier. I have 3 kids and when my " baby" at almost 4 gets sick its still just as scary as when my now 8 year old was a baby!

The good news is Kids are really resilient, they pop back form these things and next week when shes bouncing off the walls again you will have forgotten all about it :)

Good luck and try to get some rest while she is resting thats the best advice I have for you :)

ps did the doc mention alternating tylenol with ibuprofen? Thats what works best for us.

Awww...poor baby and poor mom! There is some nasty virus going on around here as I ran between 102 and 102.5 fever myself all day sunday and I rarely get sick.

Don't worry, she knows how much her mommy loves her.:D

I hope your little one gets better quickly!

I always feel so helpless when i saw my kids or grandkids get ill.....but, as previously posted...they do bounce back...

a prayer and a good thought for your little one....

I'm sorry to hear. I always feel so bad when my girls are sick too. My oldest dd used to get sick quite often as a baby. I hate the cather.. one technican did and caused her to bleed  and another time when getting her blood drawn hit an artery and blood everywhere. It's hard being a parent. I'm glad to hear it is nothing and sending prayers for her to get better soon

Jenny,

I am so sorry to hear that your daughter is sick. It is one of the hardest things being a parent and seeing them suffer. {{{HUGS}}} for you and wishes that DD is feeling like her old self again soon. Hang in there!

Hope your little one is feeling better this morning. The suggestion of tylenol and ibu is a good one. That was the only way we could ever (and still) get my dd's fevers to go down. It's so hard being a mom.

Oh, that poor thing!

I hope she is feeling better soon.

{{{hugs}}}

Poor baby!!! :( I remember how hard it was (and still IS) when your kids are so sick and you wish it were you. Hoping you are both feeling a lot better today!
Hugs!

I can't stand when my son has to have IV's, blood drawn, etc. He gets so upset and I can't watch.
Jessica has kind of just shrugged it off since she was about two, so it's a lot easier with her but when she was a baby, I couldn't watch either.
Those catheters hurt (the nurse has told me before that they don't.....I'd like to see her deal with one, then.)
