My "adventure" after the DW 1/2

I signed up I trained, I went from Oregon to Florida for the event. I got swept but I gave it my best shot! I met Dave and Erica, Maria and other WISHERs! I loved my time at DW.

Then, on Wenesday/Thursday of the following week, while still at DW, I had a stroke! Yes, just 2 days after my 51st birthday, I started having symptoms.

Looooong story short, I knew what was going on and as strokes go it wasn't too bad, and for some reason (denial?), I didn't go to hospital. Rather, I waited until our flight home (my daughter was with me), managed to get home, and spent the entire next day in the ER. That was 6 weeks ago. Two days ago I went back to work 1/2 time. I have about 80% function back in my right leg, maybe 85% in my speech and my hand is around 65%. My doctors say with hard work and a little luck, I should be back to 100% eventually.

This could have happened anywhere, it just happened to be in Florida. The 1/2 really had nothing to do with it, but looking back I think it had something to do with my lack of energy for the 1/2.

So, I am here to tell you to listen to your body and take your daily aspirin! Eat smart! Exercise often! Rest well! I've been given the green light to get back on the treadmill or walk outside, starting slowly. I hope to do a 5k the first weekend in May.

Be well,
Karla

Karla,

Oh my goodness! What a scary time for you. But I'm glad you're recovering and even planning your next event! Please keep us updated on your progress. And take care of yourself!

wow, my prayers for your continued recovery. I am so sorry this happened to you. At 53 I worry that I too won't listen if there is a problem. We all think, oh it'll go away or we're so used to a pain here or there, we don't think it's all that bad. Glad your on the mend. I hope you can come back fighting - a great Disney story, She has stroke but fought to come back and try it again!

Beats Did not Start by a Long shot!

Karla, I am new to the WISH team, but want to let you know that I'm thinking of you and hoping that you will make it back to do another WDW event.
My family history is full of strokes at early ages, so your post really struck home. I am so glad that your recovery is proceeding so well.
:) You Rock!

Karla, you have an amazing story. PD, prayers and positive energy to you and for a fantastic recovery. I am proud of you for knowing that you will need to continue onward from here and for sharing your story with us.

Please come back often to let us know what you are doing. Small steps. I'm glad to read you can get back to taking those steps. I was so inspired in my first 1/2 when I met a fine gentleman on the bus to the registration at WDW. He was a recent stroke survivor and was walking the 1/2. He amazed and inspired me. You are another inspiration to me.

You go! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Karla, I was wondering where you were. I'm sorry to hear of your stroke, but so glad to hear that you are recovering. Thanks to for the reminder to listen to our bodies. I know I, for one, am guilty of not doing that. I will be more diligent about that.

God speed and take care of yourself.
