**Update post #20** My cute little DGS, who's 3/12 months, has been suffering from diaherra the past 10 days. His mom has taken him to the doctor at least 2 times and he's had bloodwork 2X and a stool sample and everything is coming back normal - they've tested for e-coli, salmonella, parasites, etc. His mom has only nursed him since birth - is it possible he may be lactose-intolerant even from her milk? He hasn't had a fever and so far, hasn't become dehydrated, but he isn't fond at all of the special formula and Pedialyte they've been trying to give him. Anyone have any experience and words of encouragement ? I know babies go through this sometimes, but it just doesn't seem like it's getting any better.

**Thanks to all those that posted suggestions as to what might be the cause. If this starts up again, at least I can give some suggestions they might not think about if they have to go see the specialist.**

Since there is no illness that they can find, then the next step is to see if it is food related. It is probably allergies. There will be different formulas for them to try. It could also be something the mom is eating that the baby is allergic too..so it may not be dairy. Good luck!

Baby is 3mo? Something is causing it. That would make me a bit nervous since he is so young.

Has the mom eaten anything different? Maybe it is an allergy via breastmilk.

I'm not sure if they did test for rotovirus, but Kate(his mom)said he got a vaccine for this at his 2 month shots? I've never hard of a vaccine for rotovirus, but 25 years ago kids didn't get the # of shots they get now.

As far as mom's diet, she couldn't think of anything different she'd been doing. She had been eating pretty much a "normal" diet, up until this started. I know she was still drinking milk, but I was hoping the doctor would tell her to maybe try eliminating that from diet. I did suggest she try Soy milk instead, but I don't want to become the interferring MIL.

There was a vaccine for rotavirus when my niece was born. 5 months later when my son was born the vaccine was discontinued because it caused "intestinal blockage". My son did not get the vaccine and- guess what- he got rotavirus. That was the WORST illness, between the diarrhea, throwing up, refusal to eat or drink anything, etc. Since then, they have reissued the vaccine- DS just happened to fall in that window where it was not offered.

I hope your DGS is better and they find out what is causing it.

This may sound crazy, but what about water? My son had on-going diarrhea for the first 11 months of his life. It was awful and so frustrating. Then, a friend who had a water softening company suggested we try bottled water. He gave us enough for the weekend. Problem solved ! Turns out that our water had a lot of heavy metals in it that my son was sensitive to.

Just a thought.

Maybe a milk protien allergy? I had this problem with my son, who was exclusively breastfed, and he outgrew it. I cut ALL millk products from my diet (not an easy thing to do...basically I ate chicken and fish, rice, potatoes, and veggies - nothing with any milk or dairy in it al all... for about 3 months).

Just spoke to DS about the baby - DGS still has the diaherra, but is in great spirits. I again mentioned avoiding dairy, but not sure if they're really listening to me. They have an appt on Tues at UMass Medical with a pediatrician there - not sure what his specialty is. I did tell them to be sure that all test results are faxed to this specialist or carried in by them so poor Sawyer doesn't have to go thru all the bloodwork, xrays, stool cultures again. Sure hope it's nothing serious and it'll start to get better on it's own soon.

Try GOAT milk!! It's a different make up than Cow milk. A couple of friends have had this same problem with their babies, and did research. It worked like a miracle. Even on the baby that was being breast fed. Good luck!

My ds did not have solid poop until he was 3yoa. He was lactose intolerant. I did not breastfeed though. He was 2 months old when he was diagnosed. He kept having diareha and really bad diaper rash. It looked like his butt was being burned. Even though his butt looked like it was extremely painful he was in great spirits. The dr diagnosed it at reflux but instead of it coming up it was going out. He had to go on the ultra expensive formula.

Good luck to your family. It's not fun when babies are sick.

Try Primadophilus Children, Powder by Nature's Way. The powder can be mixed with her breastmilk. This will help the bad bacteria minimilize in the digestvie tract and replace it with good bacteria. It works WONDERS! http://www.evitamins.com/product.asp?pid=12151
I can tell you from personal experience. Be sure to keep it refrigerated so the cultures stay alive.

Is his mom eating or drinking anything with high fructose corn syrup? My little guy couldn't have anything with that in it or he had diarrhea. He did outgrow that, but boy has soon as he consumed something with that stuff in it, he would have a nasty BM to follow.

Hope the little tyke is feeling better soon!

This happened to the little one I took care of. The pediatrician said she was okay but her Mom was still scared. My sister works in a children's hospital and said it sometimes happens if a baby gets sick. They overcome the illness but have diareah for a while. The little one was fine after about two weeks. She never ran a fever and was never dehydrated. I am glad that the parents are following up though.

DS#1 had this when he was about 4 months. He was on soy formula though. They tested him for everything, all came out fine. It was so bad sometimes it would come out green---like grass green. :scared:

We gave him some pedialite, often mixed it w/his formula (per doctor's orders) and were told it would run it's course. My ped. has said on most occasions, she isn't too worried about baby poop. It's all shapes/sizes/consistancies, and some don't have "solid" until they are toddlers.

She was right, after about 2 weeks he grew out of it and was/is just fine!

Tell them to ask the dr about something called c-diff (sp?) it is some kind of infection that needs an antibiotic. I watch kids and one little girl had the same symptoms your gs has and it went away with an antibiotic.

That is what my sister said it was. She said that if it was not severe they did not use antibiotics. I think the little one I watched had bee sick, was given an antibiotic, had a horrible reaction to her teeth and then the c-diff

OP here - I guess my DGS is doing quite a bit better today. My DS fed him the special formula most of yesterday(instead Mom's milk and Sawyer takes the bottle better from Dad)and the diaherra has stopped at this point. YEAH! Kate tells me she doesn't think it's a milk allergy as this formula is milk based and it did seem to do the trick. She's going to nurse him today to see if the diaherra comes back and it may be something she's eating that's causing the issues. If things continue to improve, they'll probably hold off on seeing the specialist and just assume it was something that had to work thru his system. Sure hope that's the case - it's been a rough couple of weeks for DS and family - Kate's other DS son ended up with a stomach bug/ear infection this week, just to add to their stress. Oh, the fun of being parents!
