My 1st Trip Report~ The good, the bad, and the yucky! Finally FINISHED!

Oh no! What a horrible time you had. I can relate to the closed throat and difficulty breathing ordeal. I suffered from acute tonsillitis 3 times where I could hardly breathe and it hurt like hell to swallow - it felt like there was a blade jammed in my throat and I would swallow on reflex and each time, it was like pressing down on 'the blade'. I also had to spit all the time, you have no option at all as it won't go anywhere else.

I can't believe they sent you home from the hospital that night though - I'm surprised they didn't keep you in to observe you after such an ordeal. Take my advice, get those tonsils whipped out. I had mine removed 3 years ago and I never had as much as a sore throat since. When tonsillitis is as severe as you had it, with abscesses too, it's the best move in my opinion. Surgery is always a last resort but in your case it's worth considering.

Don't try to be so brave next time :) I understand why you didn't want to spoil the holiday but next time, don't be a hero :)

Sorry you had to cut your trip short - but seems it was the best thing!

Waiting for the happy ending!!

I was just wondering if you would have stayed in bed for the 1st 2 days and not gone out maybe it would have gone away or at least not have turned out so bad. I know that's hard to do, stay in bed for 2 days while in WDW :earseek: but at least you might have been able to salvage some of your vacation and feel better for the last part of your trip. :confused3
Just a thought.....

Oh wow :scared1: They would have had to knock me out to get a needle like that in my throat, sounds disgusting, horrible and painful. Just glad that you are ok now,

Claire xx

OK, I'm hooked. Gotta know the ending.

DW got sick about 3 days before our last trip with flu symptoms. As soon as she started complaining, I told her to get an appointment! Luckily, the medicine worked and we had a good trip.

Ok, now I have to subscribe just to see how it ends. I always get sick right before the vacation so I have really OD on meds to go.

I spent the next few days in bed. Monday I was feeling better but by Monday night I was feeling horrible again. My throat was swelling and I was back to not being able to swallow. I called my doctor on Tuesday and set up an appointment for Thursday to check everything out before I had to return to work on Friday. By Wednesday evening I was feeling exactly like I did before I went to the ER. Stiff achy back, feverish, throat swollen, no eating or drinking and back to the bottle spitting. Wednesday night Chad went to the store to get me some more soup and jell-o in hopes I could eat it and I was sleeping on the couch. I awoke with a metallic blood tasted in my mouth and ran to the bathroom. I immediately began spitting up a brown gooey liquid followed by blood. The smell of it was worse than the taste. (If you just have to know, PM me and I’ll tell you exactly what it smelled like, but you may never be able to eat something again, I know I won’t!) I frantically called Chad to hear his cell ringing in the living room. I called my best friend who only lives a few minutes away but she was gone to the store. I was really starting to flip out. My friend stayed on the phone with me and dashed out of the store to come to my house, while I was still spitting and gagging. I was getting ready to hang up and call 911 when Chad showed up at home. The spitting continued for about 10 minutes, but by the end it was full fresh red blood, no more goo or puss. I felt much better within an hour and since I was going to the doctor the next day I figured I would be fine. I slept great that night and didn’t have any other problems.

The next day I went to my doctor, found out I had lost 16 lbs!. This was not all contributed to the illness, and I knew it, but some of it was. I had a close friend get tragically killed in early November and haven’t had much of an appetite since, so the 16 lbs is from that combined with being sick. I hadn’t been on a scale in the time between his death and me going to the doctor. Today my voice had returned and I could speak almost like a normal human. My tongue was still swollen, but I sounded much, much better. My doctor listened to all my symptoms and took one look in my mouth and turned away. He immediately sent me to see an ear, nose and throat specialist. He said I had fooled around with this stuff enough and should just nip it in the bud and go. He also mentioned that removing my tonsils was a good possibility, since it was something we had discussed in the past year or so anyway. We went to the ENT’s office and I sat and waited for about 20 minutes before the receptionist tells me that they don’t take my insurance. I can’t afford to pay out of pocket again and wait to get reimbursed with what I have already paid, so we left and I contacted my insurance who quickly found me an ENT in the next city over. My doctor kept urging me to get to the ENT today so we went right away. The ENT was great, he checked me out and poked around in my tonsils for a while. He removed a small hard white lump using some tweezers and broke the news to me. I could KEEP my tonsils. :hyper: This time anyway. He said if I had any other problems I would have to have them removed, but for now I was going to be ok. All of my acheness and pains were attributed to the massive amounts of infection in the abscesses, which had quickly built back up or where never removed fully when the ER doc drained it. The episode I had the night before was the abscess bursting and draining. By the next day when I returned to work, I felt much better and was in minimal pain. My throat continued to be swollen for about a week and I had pain off and on, but much better than before. Actually the pain in my behind where the steroid shot was given was worse than my throat! :rotfl: That lasted for about 3 weeks! :headache:

As the weeks passed since our trip I got sadder and sadder  that it was such a disaster. I am an avid scrapbooker and we kept finding awesome scrapbook stuff that would have been perfect for things I wanted to do. I got my pictures developed and the few that we had were great, but there were so many things I missed that I wanted to get. I was getting downright moody everytime someone asked me how my trip went and tired of reliving the story. It didn’t help on Christmas when I got a bunch of the new scrap items that I wanted for Disney but had no pictures to use with.

The day after Christmas I got a glimmer of hope when I checked TouringPlans.com and saw that there were a few days with low crowd levels expected in January. A quick check of the my bank account squashed this idea. I did some more research (grasping at any straws here :teeth: ) and saw that the last days in Feb and the first few days in March were the same crowd levels that were expected during our December trip. I did some calculations and came up with a bargaining list for Chad. I figured we could afford 4 nights at a value resort and we would drive down. Now selling this to Chad would not be easy as he hates to drive that far for less than 7 days. I pitched the idea to him over lunch on the 28th. He didn’t immediately shoot me down. I bargained a few other things (no buying any more shoes :rotfl: (yeah right! and I already snuck a new pair in the house the other day!) and not mentioning the D-word (Disney) until we leave, plus some more) and got him to agree. By the 31st I was set to make our reservations and with the AP program it was our last day to snag March 1st-5th. NYE shortly before midnight I made the hotel decision and booked a room at All Star Movies. We have never stayed here before and I would rather stay at a mod on a long trip, so this will let me cross another value off my list of hotels I want to stay at. And I figure if it is too :crowded: crowded or we don’t like it we are only there for 4 days so how bad could it be! I couldn’t believe I was actually able to talk Chad into this, and my 25th Birthday is March 11th, so this is going to be my birthday present. I never dreamed I would be able to go to WDW anytime around my birthday because of Spring Break crowds so I am just as excited as I was for our December trip. A new ticker was born and I am excitedly counting the days until we leave. :bounce: :bounce:

Hopefully the next trip will be much better, all be it shorter and I will have a more Disney related TR to give you. Thanks for all the well wishes and for reading my report.

Have a Magical Day! :wizard:

Let's hope that this trip is a "healthy" trip for you, so that you can enjoy it better!!!

Thanks for the trip report, and I'm glad that you are now feeling better!!!

:goodvibes

Tabitha,

you are truly a trooper!! just goes to show how strong the human spirit is! I am so very glad to hear you're able to "continue" your Disney vacation and Chad sounds like a real sweetheart of a guy....stay healthy, have an awesome trip and tell us here all about it when you return!

:flower3: Michelle

I'm so happy for you that you can return to WDW again soon.

If you feel even the slightest bit ill before this trip, get to the doctor and get an antibiotic, even if it's a just-in-case one! Better safe than sorry!

Happy planning for your next trip! :)

let's hope the next trip report is all happy happy fun news!!!! glad you are feeling better now!!

I am so glad everything turned out OK in the end for you, and you have another trip booked!

You must have quite the pain tolerance, after day 1, I would have wimped out! :faint:

I think you should get the "sickest-in-Disney" award.

When I was little, I had strep A LOT! As soon as the antibiodics wore off I got it again. I was five when I had my tonsils taken out, and I've never had strep again. I very rarely even get a sore throat. So if you do have to get the tonsils out, don't agonize about it!

I registered for this board just to add my applause for Tabitha and Chad. Like many of you, I got caught up in this story. I laughed and cried with every twist and turn. I applaud the perseverance of Tabitha and support of Chad thoughout the whole ordeal. This read like a made for TV movie, complete with a happy ending.

So here's to you. I hope that the sun shines everyday for your triumphant March return and that you get to do everything that you missed and more.

Strep and tonsilitus are 2 different things. If you have more than 3 streps in one year, then they will take out your tonsils. But if your tonsils get infected, which is not strep, Dr's don't want to take them out.

Thanks a million, you made my day!

My son knows how you feel! the first 3 times we went to Dis he got strep. The 4th time we took antibiotics with us. No Strep but a month later we went to Ft Meyers beach and he had it there - luckily we had the meds (which the dr forgot he subscribed a month earlier to us - we had gone in for a strep test the day we left - they were frantically leaving us messages saying he needed to get on meds - I had told them we had a prescription with us and he was taking it on the initial call - which they obviously forgot to write down - I was the bad mom to them - but actually the good mom) I attributed DS strep to licking the railings, putting his fingers in his mouth when nervous etc - I hope you weren't doing that!

We talked to other families too who say their kids always get sick, they take a humidifier with them and that seems to work etc. One family with 4 small kids had strep (they all passed it around) and the mom broke her ankle while they were there!

We are going with our friends again this year that my kids always seem to get sick with! Hopefully we can be successful

Have a great trip in March Don't lick the railings! We head down at the end of it - hopfully not too busy!

My DH and I returned from a Christmas cruise a few weeks back and to celebrate his 40th BD, and last couple days he started with this same type thing, the last night of our cruise (sadly Christmas Eve) he had that same feeling of the glue like congestion and woke saying he couldn't breath. We went down to the infirmary and he had 2 bouts of albuterol inhaler and finally it broke up the thigh mucus, scary! Then spent the rest of the night sleeping on our balcony. Then I ended getting it when we got back, so we both were sick the following week, it was a really rough illness. But the good news is now we're planning a Disney trip April to make up! :woohoo: I'm so glad to hear you're going back, I really enjoyed your story the good and the bad!
