My 10 yo DS just started a paper route!

Today was his 3rd day, and he still enjoys it! LOL. It is only 16 papers, and myself of DH take him around. I got so tired of him thinking I can just buy him whatever he wants, when he wants it, when I can't get him to clean his room without a battle. So, he will probably never earn an allowance here, so he can earn his money servicing other people.

Once the route transition smooths out, and he gets full weekly profit (because he started in the middle of the week, and it was a route they made by taking some address' off another route, this week is confusing) I am going to take half his money, and put it away. The other half, he can spend at will, but he will soon find out, it runs out fast!

My DS10 would love to get a job to buy all the things he wants but we don't even have traditional paper routes around here...

We had a paper route as kids as well. They are now a thing of the past here now. Most paper's are delivered early in the morning, which makes them motor routes now!

That is great! They don't have those kinds of routes around here. I think it is great that you are teaching him to earn what he wants. I think a lot of kids today are used to being handed things and it is refreshing to hear of someone teaching their child to earn what they want and to save. My DS is 10, but there aren't really any opportunities like that here. We do "hire" him to do extra chores (like working in the yard, and he really steps up to the plate to earn some extra money).

Just curious about the paper route, is it in your immediate neighborhood? What time does he have to get up to collect his papers and have them delivered? Best of luck to him!!!

Good for him! My paper route was 26 houses on my block. My mom was the "paper lady" who had the papers delivered to our house and all the kids picked them up from there. It was a great first job and taught me a lot about responsibility and money handling. Good luck to your son.

Not on our street, but the houses are on the street our street is off of. So, yes, it is our neighborhood. Just goes about 1.3 miles into our neighborhood, LOL. It is a busy street, and many of the houses have long driveways, so we will be driving him until he is 12/13, if he keeps it that long.

What time does he have to get up to collect his papers and have them delivered? Best of luck to him!!!

The paper is an afternoon paper. They get dropped in the driveway around 1PM, and they have to be delivered by 5PM, M-F. Sat, Sun papers are morning papers, and have to be delivered by 8AM. We got up and out at 6AM this morning. Will do the same tomorrow. He's always been a morning kid, and me getting up with him will allow me a jump on early morning housework!
