I am not a big dining fanatic as I eat anything and my companions usually want any "cheap" hamburger or chicken meal and don't care for entertainment. So in helping a neighbor plan, I am not sure what to recommend. She really wants to do Hoop De Doo and for the ages of the boys I certainly feel like Crystal Palace or Garden Grill. What are your suggestions?

For those ages:
-Chef Mickey's (we recommend breakfast)
-Crystal Palace (again, breakfast)

Crystal Palace Breakfast
Garden Grill Dinner-Best character dining and best character experience we've every had
Ohana Breakfast-Stitch!
Chef Mickey's is chaos x10 and the food is blech!

If she is looking for character meals, Tusker House, Garden Grill, and Crystal Palace are all good. Chef Mickey's has the fab five, but the food is terrible.

The 2 y.o. does not care and will not remember.

Characters are not enjoyed by all small children (like a 2 y.o.).

Focus on what's best for the 5 y.o.

An early evening dinner show may be too much for a family that was in the Parks and/or at the swimming pool earlier in the day.

I'd recommend planning only for breakfast or lunch.

-- Coral Reef (in Epcot) for the live fish.
-- Sanaa (at AKLodge) for the animals. But only if they have a car. Going resort-to-resort on Disney transportation is a hassle (even without the 2 y.o. who thinks a bus trip is a ride).

Thanks all. She is still set on Hoop Dee Doo but I will steer her towards Crystal Palace for sure

My kids at 6 and 2 loved whispering canyon too - all the shenanigans and ketchup running was right up their alley. That, and bottomless milkshakes

Mickey's back yard BBQ. Kids can run around and be kids.

Mickey's BYB does allow kids to run around and be kids, but that can be a struggle for a mom with two little ones. We did it last September and my older one (9 at the time) did well with eating, but my four year old wanted to run around the entire time. Made it hard to enjoy my meal. I was only able to sit for about five or six minutes the entire meal. The other time I was up getting food for the kids or myself or following the little one as she ran around. It is great for kids, but can be stressful for parents.

I don't know if the OP is going with two kids alone or if her husband is going, too, but I would certainly not do MBYB by myself with two kids, and it is still a challenge with two parents and two kids.

Last November my boys were 2 and 4 for our trip. Contrary to what some others have posted, my 2 year old absolutely was in AWE of the characters. Looking at some of the pictures that the photopass photographers caught with his eyes lit up and smiling from ear to ear actually brings tears to my eyes. I will never regret taking him to Disney at that young age, it was definitely worth it. My 5 year old was not so much in to the characters, but he thought eating in the castles was awesome. He was super excited about getting a sword at CRT and thought the spookiness of BOG and the beast was very cool too. We enjoyed Chef Mickey's but would probably not do it again. The character experience there was better than the food. We really liked Hollywood & Vine seasonal dinner. I would suggest showing them some Youtube videos of the restaurants and see what they're interested in. That helped us make our decisions. This time we're going to try Spirit of Aloha dinner show,'Ohana breakfast, Trattoria Al Forno breakfast, Sci-Fi Dine-In, and Tusker House as well as some of our favorites from last time.

Having had all 4 kids terrified of big costumed creatures that they knew had humans inside (yes, my kids also knew the store Santas were fake all along...it's why we discuss that they are stand ins - I literally had kids who would scream if you took them near Santa who now just go "eh" when they seem him...but still avoid the pics:))...I would not plan TS character meals unless you know their 2 and 5 year olds actually like them.

Also, you don't say if they are on DDP or not, and if so, if it's DxDP, DP, and CSP...if this is all OOP, I would recommend very few sit downs, since 2 and 5 year old boys do NOT sit down, normally...they run and get anxious having to wait on tables, wait for food, wait for checks, etc...

I think Hoop Dee Doo is fine b/c she really wants it and the show will entertain them. After that, I'd tell her dining is REALLY pricey, especially at character buffets, but it can be worth it if the kids can hack the expected waits and process...

If they can hack it, I'd actually recommend T-Rex b/c that restaurant is all boy...getting to dig for dinos before hand, seeing dinos everywhere, etc...and it's not too pricey for what they'd get...

I'd also 2nd the Sanaa and Coral Reef recommendations since they also have entertainment while dining...which might be very important for them...

I'd steer a million miles away from buffets due to price, the need to get up and get plates for each kid and then the parent, the need to time and get good behavior for the pics (and somehow still eat), the possibility of freak outs from either child over characters, etc...

My kids have always loved the characters. The first time my oldest DD went she was just under 2, then at 2.5, 3, 4 etc..... My younger DD went for the first time at 4 months, 1 yr Bday, 3 BDay and this year they will be 12 and 6. I have great pics of my DD at 1 hugging pooh and another of her touching Piglet's tail at CP breakfast. The last time she went she was turning 3 while we were there. She still has vivid memories of our trip...she doesn't remember all of it, but she does remember parts. My DDs at those ages loved CP and GG.

She thinks her kids will love charecters. They will be on the Regular Dinkng Plan. It will be her and her husband. I know the buffets can be a challenge due to the lengthy process. I really hadn't thought much of T-Rex, I don't know why as that does scream "boy". (FWIW I am planning to eat there when I am down in two weeks!!!!) Coral Reef was one I was thinking of too so nice to hear you think it is a good option. Thanks.

My kids LOVED Crystal Palace breakfast. My 5yo is asking to go eat with Pooh again!
