You can try, but I think they will try very hard to dissuade you - not because they want to make a buck, just because the sound will not be optimal at your locations. At the Attic, for example, if you only had a boombox, you wouldn't be able to hear the music very well inside if it were outside, and vice versa. Plus, someone from your party will have to run ahead and set it up.
In Italy, they will probably want you to have a sound system anyway just so the groom and officiant can be miked. Their rule of thumb is if you have more than 25 guests at an outdoor site, you need amplification. For me, I didn't want one of my guests to have to basically miss experiencing the ceremony to run the sound. The reception is easier because you can put it on and leave it on.
But if it's really important to you, talk to your planner about it!
