Mumps!

My youngest has been fighting a "cold" for several days. Yesterday he woke up with one side of his face swollen. We're fairly certain it is the mumps! I'm waiting for the pediatrician to call us back this morning to see if he needs to be seen, have blood drawn or what. I know it's a reportable disease, and he did have his MMR.

Remember last year when Iowa had all those mumps cases?? What is going on with our vaccines!!?

Holy cow! I haven't heard oif anyone having the mumps since I was a little kid, I didn't think they were still around! Hope he feels better soon!!

They use to daignose me with the mumps at least once a year. In the end, it was decided that I just had super glands that swelled whenever I had an infection! Hope all goes well for you little one! And you also!

more likely it is paratiditis since it is on one side. Mumps is usually both sides. My kids had paratiditis when they were younger. They went on antibiotics and it was gone in 24 hrs

I think the cases in Iowa were among unimmunized people. However, my niece got the chicken pox after getting her vaccine, so who really knows?

At least he got it young. Hopefully it will be a mild case.

the cases in Iowa were within immunized populations - at the time mostly college students. At the time, they were hoping that they could account for it through the 10% of the population that will get it even after immunization - and the rest they felt may not have received the second booster.

Blaming the unimmunized is an easy scapegoat - but the fact is that most of these outbreaks are taking place WITHIN immunized populations - and should be showing us that this is clearly a bigger problem.

NO vaccine is 100%, and they have an finite life of keeping titers elevated. That's why pets have to be revax for rabies and distemper every couple of years.

I had mumps on one sie, then three weeks later the other side as a kid. It's quite possible tog et them that way. Make sure your child stays away from men who haven't had the disease, and pregnant women, vaccinated or not.

Mumps is MOST definitely making a comeback, especially among immunized adults. Everyone employed at my hospital had to have a mumps titer drawn a couple of months ago to make sure we're still immune.

He's going in tomorrow at 10:15. The nurse kinda pooh-poohed it at first and was going to blow it off until I told her we were quite sure it was mumps. (My dad is an MD and I am a PA. We both looked him over.)

Anyway, she quickly checked with the pediatrician after that and made the appointment for tomorrow. It makes me wonder how many of these go unreported! Especially if it's a mild case (which if you've been immunized and you catch it, it's probably going to be a very mild course.)

Anyway, that's today's update! I'll let you know what his doctor says.

Mumps isn't uncommon over here, despite having the vacine, i know quite a few people who have had it. I think it's one of those things that appears for a couple of months then you don't hear about for awhile, abit like chicken pox.

We had a large mumps outbreak in the college population here a couple of months ago. We've had spotty cases throughout the county since then. It is making a comeback. Good luck at the doctor!

It's not true that mumps are generally on both sides. People often get mumps on only one side. I hope it turns out to be something else for your DS.

His appointment is at 10:15. I'll let you know after. I have a feeling they are going to think I'm nuts because he looks fine today.

The doctor visit is over! He said it could be mumps. It could be another virus. The only way to tell is to draw blood for an IgM titer for mumps. He doesn't really see the need because DS is already improving and he cleared DS for school.

I didn't push for the blood test, but I am curious. He is due for his 2nd MMR in 6 months (at age 5).

I thought mumps had to be reported so I'm surprised he didn't do the test. WOuldn't it be good for him to know?
