WE picked an ornament off our Church's Angel Tree. It's for an 11 yr old boy and he is requesting an MP3 player. I dont want to buy junk but also cant spend a fortune. Any thoughts on a good brand? Trying to keep it around $50.
Also, do all MP3 players require internet connection? Thanks for any help.

I can't answer the technical questions but just wanted to comment that DD9 and I were surprised at the number of children whose angel tree request was an ipod this year. We planned to do some comparison shopping next week for the angel tree but I'm hoping that means the prices have dropped as technology has advanced enough to make this an everyday item for so many...

I believe that is the only way to get the music on there. Lots of people have computers or they can probably get help from friends on that account. My kids started out with the cheaper ones and they were fine.

I would check Apple online. I've bought several refurbished iPod shuffles for about $40. They come with the exact warranty that new ones do. I don't see any up there right now, but they change their inventory throughout the day. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod

Not only will you need the internet connection, but you also have to be able to buy the music. I would be really hesitant about getting something like that for an angel tree gift. Not because I wouldn't want to buy a kid an MP3 player, but because I don't know if the child understands that you still have to buy the music.

Can't you load your CD's onto your itunes account without paying for them again? :confused3

DD loads her CDs on her ipod. The big draw for kids is being able to carry all of your music around with you. She rarely buys music from the itunes store. I'm sure MP3 players are the same.

That assumes that the child has CDs to upload... I guess I'm just leery of buying those types of things because I'd be afraid that the child wouldn't actually be able to use it.

How about getting an inexpensive MP3 player with an FM radio built in. That way if the child can't download music they will at least be able to listen to the radio. I just googled them and there are many in the $30-40 range.

Friends or older siblings will be able to share music with them usually.

Our family has non ipod music players and no problems sharing music.

I have some experince with cheap mp3 players. I would get a Sansa, Sansa, Sansa. All three foster kids have sansa mp3 players. They hold well plus buy them cheap at woot.com and buy.com .

If want go really cheap mp3 player check walmart.com for coby mp3 player for 20.99 . It really simple mp3 players that works.

I am not sure I would buy an MP3 for the very reason that they would have to have music to put on it. Yes they can use their own CD and really don't even have to an internet connect, just a computer. But if someone is truely in need they may not even have CDs or a computer.

Thanks for your suggestions. I also worry about him not being able to use it but it is what he asked for.

I think times have changed. If your giving tree is families in the community it is very possible they have a computer and internet in the home.

If the Angel tree is for a "home" or "shelter" than I would think their access would be limited.
