In 1989, we had a family reunion at the Fort Wilderness cabins. I was 7. It was pretty memorable since we drove through the eye of Hurricane Hugo to get to WDW! At any rate, one of my memories from then was that there was a mower/possibly a bike? that had become embedded in a tree as the tree grew around it. I think it may have been by the docks? Anyone know if this is still there or what happened to it?

As an aside, we will be at the campsites over Thanksgiving 2014, and I can't wait to show my own children around FW!

Yep lawnmover tree is still there but not much of it left to be seen. Looks like they are cutting the tree back a little to try and keep it visible a bit longer.

The tree died several years ago, but the stump with the lawn mower blade is still there!

If you are coming FROM the marina and turn right, the "tree" is just at the end of the path before it joins the circle toward Trail's End. I believe there is a rail fence starting right next to the "tree".

Here you go.

The Lawn Mower tree has been removed. :sad2: "so says some folks at the Fort right now" on another Disney forum.

The tree has been gone several years. It was dying (or died) and for safety's sake had to be cut down.

The stump is still there and part of the blade is still visible.

If you look at post #6 you will see the tree doesn't look too healthy (worm holes) - not sure when that picture was taken.

When I looked closer at that tree I noticed that the mower appeared to be surrounded by rich lighter knot. For those of you not familiar, it is a very sap rich portion of a pine that is excellent for splitting off pieces of and using to light fires. It will practically light when wet. Problem is, it is very hard, and typically lasts for years, even exposed to the elements. I actually have some that I have been chipping off of for years here around the house. That tree will probably rot right down to that lighter knot, but the knot will last for a very long time. Translation, that mower could be there for a good long while if Disney does a good job of protecting it.

Here is another picture of the mower I took last week.

The mower tree was there until Friday. On Saturday it rained so we decided to go to trails end for dinner and unless I had a Major oversight it was gone the sign included. It took me a minute to figure out what was different. It was raining and dark but I believe it's gone.

The picture I posted above your post was from last Monday. I sure hope they didn't cut it on down. I am sure you would have seen the fresh stump removed, as stated above this tree is going to have a large root system with some fine kinling as we use to call it to start fires. So if it was removed from between Friday and Saturday, I am sure it would have been noticeable where the work was done. Let's just hope it was an oversight.

Wow, does this bring back memories! I'm a southern LA gal and we also always had a large 'lightern knot' that we would chip kindling off of to start our fires. 'Nothing' compared to those 'splinter kindling' to get a fire going fast!

I, too, think that portion of stump can survive a 'long' time.

I use to love to go cut some off the log, to light it and hear it crackle was the great sounds of winter!

Any updates from anyone there now?

Hmmmm, I am wondering if we can call someone at the Marina or the Settlement Trading Post and have them give us a report on the tree.. LOL :thumbsup2

Here now and I heard they ground the stump the other day :( but I will go check tomorrow and see for sure....

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but they were removing the lawnmower tree when we were on our way to the boat last week. When we returned it was another golf cart parking space.. kinda bummed...
