Moving up from part time employee to full time employee

I am so frustrated with this company DH is working part time for. I just don't understand their HR department.

A few weeks ago DH received a call from one of the supervisors at his work. They have a few Full time spots opening up & they want DH to apply. The told him he 1st on the list to hire full time.

DH works full time somewhere else but part time for this company when we need/want extra money. He really likes this new place because it is more like a family & they are very supportive of their employees. He says everyone is always in a good mood there. So when he got that phone call we were both REALLY excited.

It would also be a HUGE raise in pay. His hourly wage would go up but also because his current job does not pay any portion of our insurance premiums. Its great insurance either way but paying 20% vs 100% of premiums would be a LOT better!:thumbsup2

So because of the fact that it would be more money, DH would not have to work any extra jobs or overtime when we want/need more money for something. The ONLY bad thing about this job is cancelling our Anniversary trip. We have both decided it would not be a good idea to ask for time off 3 months after starting such a great job. Its a bummer, but there is no question about the sacrifice.

Here is the problem. When he interviewed last week they told him the would most likely make a decision Friday & he would be notified by email. No email ever came. On monday they called him to work a special event and he asked if he would be notified either way on the full time position. She said yes, and that she would probably send out the email that afternoon. No email.

Its Wednesday... still no email. I just don't understand what is taking so long. Its driving me crazy! Any idea on the hold up? I just need to vent because if I ask DH one more time if he got an email I think he is going to explode:eek:. The more time that goes by, the more nervous we are that something has gone wrong.:headache:

Perhaps the HR Dept is just really busy right now. I know it sometimes takes my HR staff a few weeks to completely process a person from a seasonal employee to a full time employee just because it's not a high priority compared to the many things in an HR dept that cannot be put off (dealing with injuries, filling vacant positions, etc).

Are there benefits that come with the change such as insurance? Perhaps they are just waiting on forms/packets to do everything at once?

Hopefully it's not a big deal and your husband hears something soon.

I think he should follow up with the person he spoke with on Monday "to confirm that they have his correct email address." That would open the door to another dialogue about the position.

I sympathize with you on the waiting game. I applied for my "dream" job about 3 weeks ago. The competion ended a week and a half ago and I haven't heard anything yet. I called the recruiter on Monday and inquired as to where they were in the process (I used the fact that we had been away on vacation the previous week, and had been afraid I may have missed a call as a reason to contact them) but at that point they were still reviewing the applications and hope to have the short list completed by the end of the week, to start interviewing next week. The waiting sucks! Good luck to your DH, I hope he is successful!

Different company cultures have different hiring practices. For instance, I was unemployed starting in July of 2008. In mid October, I'd interviewed with my current company; second interview three days later. And then NOTHING. I mailed thank you notes, emailed "Just following up" etc.

So out of the blue in early DECEMBER, I received a call from HR for a third interview. Apparently, it's like that for most of the company's new hires. Incredibly insensitive to my way of thinking. Then a week later, I finally get the word that they want to hire me, but that the start date wouldn't be until January.

The kicker is that the Director who initially interviewed me really wanted me to start right away and it would have really prevented some problems which occurred from having someone out of the position for so long. And would have saved me 3 months of being unemployed.

Hang in there, and best wishes.

As a P.S., I wouldn't totally discount the anniversary trip. It was planned before the opportunity arose, and they know your husband and his work ethic. It doesn't hurt to mention this and see what the reaction is.

Yes there would be benefits. The main reason he wants to be considered full time at this place is the good working environment...2nd reason is the insurance. I'm wondering if they aren't waiting for something, or someone else, before they can send out the emails. He said this girl is kind of forgetfull, but I can't see her saying she would send out an email either way and then not do it. That seems really cruel.

He got an email from her on Monday, but it wasn't about the position:lmao:. We know they have it but maybe I will suggest it to him the next time he talks to her. Just to "make sure" he didn't miss anything. Good luck on your job also!!pixiedust:

I agree, it is insensitive. Especially when they know you have been out of work so long. In our case, they know that the pay raise & better benefit plan would mean a lot to our family. Patience is not one of my best points...and this is driving me crazy:upsidedow
