Moving Truck Rental:UHaul vs. Penske...positive comments?

I would go Penske. They guarantee the truck you reserved is going to be there when you need it - what a concept. In my experience the Penske trucks are newer. This has been a number of years - so it could be different - but UHaul would not guarantee an automatic transmission, and since I can't drive a stick very well that didn't make me happy.

Having said that - the people who worked at the local UHaul place were very nice, we used them for all our box needs - just not the truck.

U-Haul was extremely unprofessional when I used them ten years ago to move to the Chicago area, and I vowed to never use them again. They promised me a truck, and then didn't have one. I had movers there.....no truck. They promised they would have a truck the next day. They kept saying, "Call back in two hours." I finally said, "You aren't going to have a truck for me today, are you?" They said, "No. We aren't. Sorry."

We went with a competitor, who had a truck that minute for me.

Never again.

I wrote a complaint letter, and received a $40 voucher that expired the next month. Who moves a month after they've already moved?

We've never been able to use Penske, as every time we needed a rental, they either didn't have the size we needed available or the price was considerably more ($50+).

Uhaul----we've had good and bad.

Moving from CO to northern NV: Bad. Truck broke down in Wyoming. Trailer lights didn't work on the first car trailer, and the 2nd one we used liked to try to go to the left.

Moving from northern NV to AZ: Bad. Truck was not the right size (they couldn't get the one we needed). Ended up with DD2 and DH in the bucket seats, and me on the floor between them. We ordered the larger size truck specifically for a bench seat for the three of us.
Bad snowstorm, and DH had pneumonia. Heater on the truck didn't work.

Moving from AZ to southern NV: Bad. Truck leaked (we noted the damage when we picked the truck up, but didn't notice it was a full on gap between the wall and the roof until we got to NV and found boxes of wet clothes and stuff animals. (hit a bad storm about 3 hours from the new place.) The only thing we got was "well, good thing it wasn't your fault."

We rented one more time, a small truck for a local move here in Jax (to move washer/dryer and tv etc) that we didn't get in the Pods we used. They didn't want to give us the size truck we ordered---tried to give us a big one. They had the one we wanted, but it was a $20 rental as opposed to a $50.

*the good----twice, we used them in CO...over 20 years ago. So I'm not sure if those would count...

Realizing this is an old thread -

My personal preference is to rent a Freightlner rather than an International, Ford, or GMC. Also, look for a truck with a second set of mirrors mounted on the front fenders.

I used to work for UHaul. SO glad I don't work there anymore. Most of the customers were nice, but the management and corporate were complete morons. Can't tell you how many times a local move was bumped for a one-way move. It didn't matter is the local move was booked 3 weeks prior to the one-way move. Even though I had no control over it, I was fussed at a lot for it. A few of my customers actually heard my manager in her office (in the back in the hitch bay) cursing and punching the walls. I got into trouble for using google to estimate distance from our location to whatever city they were looking to move to (and you can't give an estimate without putting in a mileage estimate). There was a man who was known to be living in one of the climate control storage units and they refused to evict him. They'd simply tell him he had to leave and then he'd come back later that night after everyone left. If they kicked him out of x unit, then they'd just bring him inside and let him rent a different unit. It got to a point to where the cleaning lady wouldn't go into climate control alone. She'd get one of the lot attendants to go with her in case he tried to do anything weird. She got in trouble for not cleaning the floor outside of his unit when it's on video that she cleaned it and after she left, he would throw his trash out there.
I won't even get started on their U-Boxes. Regional management couldn't even help us to understand how it worked and so every time someone would call to inquire, I had to tell them that I'm sorry but I'm not sure how that works and I do not want to give you any wrong information.
Awful awful company. I'll gladly pay more to use a different company when I move.
