We are moving to knight dale, nc with my son and his family. Can you please tell me all about this area. I will be seeking a civil service job and my husband drives a tractor trailer. What is the commute to the state office buildings. Would also be open to county job. My granddaughter is in first grade so tell me about schools. Knightdale is east of downtown Raleigh about 12 miles. It is like a bedroom community of Raleigh. It would take about 20 min (non rush hour) to get between the two points - rush hour longer!

Do you know that you would be working in "downtown"? Doesn't sound like you even have a job yet? How are you settling down to one area (Knightdale) if you don't know where you will get a job? That would surely make a big difference in commute time where you were going to work. Rush hour can get plenty congested in certain areas.

The schools in Knighdale are so-so according to some friends who work in the offices and have children in the schools.

About your husband's tractor trailer. Does he have a place to park it? It could not be parked by your home, especially in subdivisions.

Agree with the PP. Schools in Knightdale are so-so at best. Friends I have who settled there sent their children to magnet or private schools. Some people really enjoy Knightdale, but it isn't my favorite place. My best friend lived there for nearly 20 years, so I was there quite often. The congestion on US 64 is awful - and that's where almost all the consumer businesses are located. There are some excellent schools in Wake County - do your homework before making that decision. I would also question the job plans before making such a move. This area is just like everywhere else in the country - more job-seekers than open positions. I'd want my ducks in a row before uprooting. That being said, it's a wonderful area and so many places to live. I wouldn't rule other towns/areas out without looking. Good luck!

I've lived in Knightdale for 15 years and love it. It's a smaller suburb of Raleigh. I see my friends and neighbors everywhere I go and I love that feeling. We have all kinds of shopping and resturants, and health care. Traffic is a breeze now that the new bypasses have opened. I can be at my job (county job) downtown in about 15 minutes. Be aware that you will have to park and walk to your job - downtown Raleigh has very limited parking and it's expensive. I pay $44/month to walk 4 blocks - but my lot is a muddy mess usually. Fun.

For elementary schools - you want Lockhart - great reputation, great teachers. You don't want Hodge Road. Forestville and Knightdale are OK.

As far as jobs - be aware that both the county and state have been in a hiring freeze for years, with lots of layoffs. It will not be easy to find a government job here.

I posted about jobs on the other thread, but I see some other people have beat me to it here. Ten years ago people could move to North Carolina without jobs and know they would get one, but that is no longer the case.

If it is a position that has to be filled and is excluded from the hiring freeze then by law they have to post it. Many of these jobs are filled by people whose previous job was cut.

Posting jobs is sometimes a formality - are usually filled from within because of lay offs etc. in different departments. Would be very hard for you just to move here expecting to get a job. The unemployment rate is very high here (as is everywhere) so there are few job opportunities just *waiting* to be filled by the general public. It's a tough process!!

You should have a job *in hand* before you move, if that's a condition you need to relocate.

Yes -- you can be pretty sure that a lot of those jobs aren't really available because there is a good inside person. The good ones may have literally hundreds of applicants, too.

There aren't any K-12 schools here although the Knightdale area will probably be less affected by reassignments than areas in Western Wake county. Unemployment in NC us higher than average. Depending on what you are looking for, it may be more difficult to find a job than you think.

This is true of Knightdale - the reassignment doesn't affect us much. There is only 1 middle school and 1 high school for the town, so that helps.

I work for the county - most jobs are filled internally or by those in layoffs from the county. It's very hard to get a foot in the door so don't count on getting multiple interviews when you get down here. Start applying now - it can take 6 months to a year to fill positions. We had an open position in August and got 300 resumes for a $30,000 yr job. Times are tough.

We live in Franklin County, north of Wake County. For the most part, kids here stay in the same Elementary/Middle/High Schools without getting shifted around. Occasionally there will be a shift if a new school gets built, but it is certainly not a yearly event like it seems to be for Wake County.

Knightdale is not a bad commute to anywhere. Thanks to the bypasses Far less traffic that commuting from say Clayton or Wake Forest. I don't notice any more local congestion here than anywhere else in the triangle. There is plenty of local shopping too. Housing is reasonable and seem to be slightly lower than surrounding areas.

I am not impressed with the schools here but there are charter and magnet schools that you can apply to which I have found are a great alternative and once they are accepted they can stay there until the next school level.

They are in the midst of building a large park/recreation area which will be great when its through and we are supposed to get a local YMCA in the coming years.

We have been here for 5 years and it has grown a lot!

Re commute: the big Crawleigh road project will be starting soon, so that's gonna kill your Knightdate commute for a good 2 years. Google it if you're interested in what it is.

You can take business 64 to New Bern Ave and get downtown without getting on 440. The construction might not be such a huge problem for their commute.

Yeah, but so will everyone else! It won't be as bad on that side as it will on mine (coming in from Johnston Co), but it won't be fun, I guarantee.
