Moving to a different resort at the 7 month mark....

So we have reservations at OKW December 7-12th. I am hoping to try to get into the VGF at the "four" month mark (which is replacing the 7th month mark for ressies prior to Jan 1). I have never switched resorts before online. If on Aug 7th VGF is available and I choose to book it, do I have to cancel OKW first- or will I get an option to cancel and use those points online during the booking process? I just don't want to lose OKW until I have something else set up- but need to use those points I have already used for the OKW booking for VGF.

If booking online, you will have to cancel OKW first and then hope VGF is available.

Member Services can typically "hold" a desired room while canceling the existing reservation. But since they don't open until an hour after the online system begins taking reservations, chances of getting a room in the first place are much slimmer.

Do you have to have the points available to do this, or do you only need to have them tied up in a reservation you're willing to cancel? I can't say I've tried. For one reason or the other I haven't been able to use the website to book. I've always had to call. Either using transferred points, modifying reservations, etc.

You only have to cancel the OKW ressie first if you need those points to book the other one. FYI, I did something similar a month ago. I looked online about 15 minutes before online booking started and found there WAS available inventory for what I wanted. I then cancelled the OKW GV and as soon as online booking was available, I booked the other ressie. Worked great, but it was a gamble. We are now booked at AKV Savanna view 2 bedroom 12/15-24 and cancelled an OKW GV for 12/18-24. I'm sure I made someone happy about that GV!

Are you sure you aren't thinking of ADRs or some other process? I see no option to cancel an existing DVC reservation while making a new reservation.

The reservation system has no such option. If you want to use points from your 11 month reservation, you must cancel it first before trying to reserve another resort. You can check to see if VGF is available first, but there exists the possibility that such availability could be gone between the time you cancel the one reservation and try to make the other.
