Movie theme rides....watch movie first?

Do you think kids would get more out of the ride experience if they saw the movie first?

My kids are approaching the age where they will be able to get on rides like Star Tours and Indiana Jones next year. However they haven't seen the respective movies yet. I offer to watch Star Wars with them on DVD but they get scared of the villians.

I'm wondering if we should just wait a few more years so they can watch the movie first.

Probably neither of those attractions will matter. They can stand on thier own merits and not depend on the movie's to make them good.

I agree with skiingfast. Those are both great stand-alone rides. I went on Star Tours for the first time when I was about 8 years old and I never saw Star Wars, and I still haven't seen all of the Indiana Jones movies but it's one of my favorite rides. If you need more proof, look at POTC. That ride was out decades before the first movie came out and it has been a DLR favorite since its beginning.

How old are your kids? We tried to watch all the movies with our kids so they would get the most out of the ride experiences. It's not a requirement but in my opinion a ride based on a movie will be more enjoyable if you've seen the movie.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. My kids are 5 & 7 now. I still feel they might enjoy it more if they saw the more first but I won't insist on it anymore. If they want to ride it first, we'll just enjoy the movie at a later time.

Good point about POTC. That's my favorite ride and my first time on it was some 20 years ago. The other rides, I certainly saw the movie first.

It's not just the newer ones, but even some of the classics might be unfamiliar to the kids. So I picked up Alice in Wonderland from the library last weekend since I know my kids don't know that story and we're going to get Tarzan next.

it's a bugs life is on the list too, since that seems to be a big (ha!) part of DCA.

Maybe not so much with Star Wars and Indiana Jones, but I want my kids to recognize the characters that we might see during our visit.

For other rides, that aren't super exciting but require following the story such as Alice in Wonderland and probably Bug's Life. there are a few to watch.

Peter Pan, Snow White, Monster's Inc, Wind in the Willows, A maybe for Dumbo, Muppets, Finding Nemo, POTC help now. A big maybe on Toy Story.

But if you plan to watch F! or one of the parades. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse for the big 5. Cinderella or Sleeping Beaty. The list goes on........ because their are lots of characters you could see in parades or walk by while they are doing meet and greets.

Also if you've seen Who Framed Roger Rabbit you'll enjoy the ride and the queue more.

When we were at DCA a month ago I was very glad I had watched ALL of monsters Inc before our trip. The ride so perfecly follows the movie it seems it would have less effect if you hadn't seen the movie. It was one of my very favorites, I loved the room of doors !!!! My DGSons loved it too aged 7 & 9
