I went to see GI Joe today :thumbsup2

Anyway, I was watching the previews, hoping for Sherlock Holmes and they showed a preview of The Last Airbender by M Night Shaylmalan (or however you spell it).

I thought this was a James Cameron movie, so I looked it up. Apparently, the James Cameron movie is Avatar, which comes out sometime soon.

The Last Airbender is M Night and comes out in 2010. This is the movie based on the TV show (Avatar: The Last Airbender)..?

So what is the James Cameron movie about?? Something else entirely?

I don't know about the James Cameron movie, but "The Last Airbender" is the movie based on the Nickelodeon cartoon "Avatar: The Last Airbender". I don't know why they shortened the name, but I can live with it as long as the movie is good. We can't wait to see it...the Shaymalan (?) one.

According to IMDB, the plot they have for Avatar (James Cameron) is: "In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture."

The plot on IMDB for The Last Airbender is: "Water. Earth. Fire. Air. In the old days, there was peace between the four nations of the world. The Avatar -- Master of all four elements -- kept peace between the the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. Only the Avatar has the ability to Bend(manipulate) all four elements, but one day, he Vanished. Then the fire nation attacked, a war for over a hundred years to all four nations. Now, for the good of the world, it's up to 12-year-old Aang (Noah Ringer), the new Avatar, to return peace and balance by putting a end to the war and to master all four elements. Aang must accept his destiny by stopping the Fire Nation's war and defeating the Fire Lord for good."

I haven't seen the show, so I don't know for sure, but it sounds like the James Cameron movie is different than the M. Night Shyamalan movie.

ETA: I just went to avatarmoviezone.com, and they have this listed as an FAQ:

Is this movie based on the Nickelodeon cartoon show, "Avatar: The Last Airbender?"

No. This is a completely original movie conceived of by writer-director James Cameron, about a decade before the cartoon series on Nickelodeon started airing.

Because James Cameron's concept and screenplay was already registered and copyrighted, he still reserves the right to use the word "avatar" as the title of his movie, in spite of the cartoon series being more widely known.

A separate movie adaption for the cartoon has been in discussion and was set to be directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

From what I remember reading, M. Night and those associated with "The Last Airbender" movie decided to drop the word Avatar to avoid confusion.

Thanks guys! This whole time I thought the James Cameron movie was based on the TV show. I need to start paying better attention ;)

I am concerned that M. Night Shyamalan is doing this movie. His movies are very dark, as is the trailer. The cartoon was very light hearted and fun for my boys to watch. I hope that he doesn't ruin it...
