Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

Hey,

I know I promised great bread machine recipes. I do have them. I seemed to have misplaced my recipe book and I want to be able to give exact measurments to you.

If anyonen sees a pink spiral bound notebook full of handwritten recipes and notes, please let me know.

Sun conures are sooo pretty! Is yours as loud as mine???? :scared1:

She has her moments of being very loud, but usually she's very good. She doesn't make a peep in the morning until she heres that one of us is up. She plays beautifully with my 4.5 year old dd (she is fully flighted) and is equal with her affection between the three of us. Poop on the shoulder is a common thing at our house. :)

Back onto the subject of bread recipes! I would love any recipes! I'd like to build at the recipe section at www.stophfcs.com, so any healthy recipes would be very appreciated.

Just found that the Disney Little Einstein cereal does not contain any HFCS, and it tastes just like fruit loops. Yum.

I think I may try this. What can I eat? I mean I still gatta use up the food we have but We need to go shopping soon. Are there any sodas that dont contain HFCS? I would be lost without at least one soda.

WOW!!!! I looked in our fridge (please keep in mind im a college studet)
The soda shelf is out
The ketchup
The Choclate sauce
The whip cream
The milk duds :(
The malt beverages
The easter candy...

Only HFCS free thing is the Oj and water WOW

Try Jones brand sodas, the use real sugar

Interestingly, I have found that my cola (two different store brands) and cranberry sauce (again, two different store brands) have no HFCS. I'm in Canada - maybe our ingredients are different? The cola has glucose and/or fructose - still not a great choice of drink, but no HCCS. I think that the cranberry sauce has fructose.

I'll check Coke and Pepsi (i.e. name brands) tomorrow and report back.

I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned...

From what I remember reading HFCS is only approved for use in food products in the USA. I'm not sure if that has changed or not.

Depressing, only the USA is "lucky" enough to have HFCS in our food products :sad1: No wonder our obesity rates are so high and health is poor

I need help understanding something. I have read that HFCS is bad for you and I am trying to eliminate (or at least greatly reduce our consumption) it from the food we buy. However, I read a lot about people finding soda, cookies, jam, etc without HFCS but still loaded with sugar. In the long run, isn't a diet that is full of sugar still bad for you? Shouldn't we be looking to replace the "junk" food with more wholesome food? Please understand that I'm not trying to flame anyone for their choices, but I am trying to see if there is something that I don't understand. I always thought that a bunch of sugar isn't good for you either.

Sugar in large amounts is not good for you, true. HFCS is even worse, it's the way your body obsorbs the HFCS that is different.

I agree that sugar should be limitted to the occasional treat or condiment (like jam, cranberries, etc). I like to eat as natural as possible and try to avoid convenience foods.

But I think avoiding HFCS keeps a harmful chemical out of my diet, whereas sugar is just an empty calorie void of any nutritional merit. :)

There are quite a few articles out there that suggest HFCS is responsible for our high occurance of type 2 diabetes, as this substance motabolizes quite differently then pure sugar.

That is why Agave is nice--it is soooo sweet...but soooo low on the glycemic index--diabetics can even use it. Take some raw coconut--some raw agave.....you have the insides of an almond joy but soooo much better for your body. And if you can finagle a raw fudge recipe made with cacao and agave and some raw almonds--holy smokes is it Almond joy heaven. And it is totally healthy for you! My friend makes it and it is to die for!!! And she's lost 30 pounds to boot. Now--she doesn't go crazy...but it makes it so easy to fill a sweet tooth....and if you have a little extra...it won't harm your body.

You can make wholesome cookies...and all-fruit spreads...are really just squashed fruit with a little bit of pectin. I don't even eat jam with sugar in it anymore.

But something in its most natural state is much better than a chemical created to taste like it.

I don't think anyone suggested here to go hog wild on the hfcs replacements.

geesh, last night my son told me he hates ALL the alternatives to his 'regular' jam which is loaded with HFCS and he eats pbj everyday for lunch. He's changed peanut butter and bread to eliminate all the bad stuff but he wants his grape jam back. sigh. I told him to pick the NEW jam he hates the least. Mean Mom.

Are you giving him grape jam without HFCS or trying to switch him to other flavors? There are some grape jellies without HFCS. Cascadian Farm makes organic grape jelly, Smuckers makes an organic grape jelly too.

My kids switched to honey instead of grape jelly.

I think for a lot of people (and me too!), cutting out HFCS is the 1st step to better health! I hope as we get used to less intense sugar flavors, it will be easier to cut back on sugar. But, I don't do artificial stuff at all, to me, the artificial chemicals that make artificial sweeteners is worse than regular sugar.

It has been my experience that the non-diet Hansen's do have HFCS in them! Goose Island makes Root Beer with regular sugar, they "boast" it on the box! I got a case at Costco today.

How many calories are in Agave? How much do you use in comparison to sugar? Can it be used in cooking? What brand do you buy?

Thanks!

I'm excited. I found some organic ketchup at King Soopers (Krogers) that has no HFCS in it. I am anxious to see what it tastes like. Even more anxious to see how my 4 yo likes it. This is one of his primary food groups as he has severe food allergies and dips EVERYTHING in ketchup. I also bought some Cascadian Farms concord grape jelly which is really good. Still on a mission to find syrup though. Looks like I will have to shell out bucko bucks for maple syrup. Baby steps.....

This thread has inspired me to start checking labels more. My General Mills Chocolate Chex cereal did not list HFCS as an ingredient.

Sloneta: I noticed that about the General Mills cereals too. But then I found out today that Kellogg's Raisn Bran has it in it! So...I put it back and bought Post Raisin Bran instead.

It's really amazing how many products it is in. You kind of know it, but until you decide to eliminate it you don't really realize just HOW many.

What brand was it? I looked at Kroger yesterday and could not find any. Ketchup is still a major food group for my DS10.
