Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

I used to get the cases at BJs, but they would put the 3 different flavors and I only really like the peanut butter ones. Does Sams have them with the same flavors or different ones?

I haven't tried the Odwalla stuff...I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

different ones I believe, but DH likes them all. I don't pay too much attention, I can't eat them because of my nut allergies.

My kids like jam(all fruit),berries, or peanut butter on their pancakes. Or butter:firefight and cinnamon. You don't really have to use syrup at all.

I totally agree about the HFCS. Spending over 20minutes turning over every loaf of bread at each new store is a real pain in the tush. Plus people stare, as they grab something and run by, and I know they're wondering why I'm reading all the bread. :rotfl:

I am used to the weird looks as I read labels in the grocery store but I have allergies and it is really surprising where some things are hiding, so I've gotten over it and I check everything, even if I do look like a complete whacko.

I have been reading you on a diet and they said that is one thing to avoid. Can someone tell me where to find foods that do not contain this and more information on it.

Better start planning for Thanksgiving if you don't cook everything from scratch...Stove Top stuffing and Ocean Spray cranberry sauce are OUT! Both have HFCS. I'm not sure why it would be in the stuffing, but it is.

For a HFCS free cranberry sauce either make it yourself (supposedly it is quite easy...I don't like the stuff so I've never made it). Or if that is too much for you, you can buy Grown Right organic cranberry sauce (they make whole berry and jellied). It is HFCS free.

doesn't it make you sick to see it in so many things and wonder why it would even be in there? I mean, soda, "Fruit" snacks, cookies, etc..... make a little bit of sense but bread? English muffins? Stuffing?? Who would have thought :confused3

Thanks to all the posts with food suggestions I have posted a list at :
http://www.lfsh.com/stophfcs/list.html

I've added names of items from my own research and surfing the web. I'll need to put a disclaimer as I've not had a chance to read the labels on everything that appears on the list.

Please let me know of any other categories you would like to see. I will work on developing out the rest of the site if the interest is there. I will also move it to it's own URL so it is "findable" for everyone.

You can add Post: Honey Bunches Of Oats With Almonds Cereal. No HFCS but it does have BHT wich is bad for you too, but that is another topic!!

Also progresso soup: 50% less sodium Chicken Noodle does not have HFCS!!

Stacy's simply naked pita chips do not have HFCS.

Thanks for such an informative thread!! I am subscribing!!

I got him the ones that look just like ritz cracker sandwiches. He likes them a lot better b/c they have WAY less salt, and salt effects him the most. :confused3 They are the TJ brand Organic mini PB sandwich crackers...they had cheese as well :)

Also, I don't think I've ever seen trans fats at Trader Joes...Don't they not sell it for policy reasons, or is that just Whole Foods?? I LOVE that I can buy baked yummy goods at Whole Foods and not have to worry about trans fats :)

We leave for Disney TOMMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When we get back though, I need to make a Whole Foods run :)

Thanks, I'll look for them this weekend. I don't know if TJs has that policy or not...have fun at Disney!!!

I'll have to see what our Costco carries next time I'm there...thanks!

Gosh, I hadn't even started to think about Thanksgiving foods! Luckily, we do stuffing from scratch, but the cranberry... I'll have to look at Whole Foods for that Grown Right brand.

Another cranberry option, is Lingonberry Jam from Sweden; it's HFCS free.

You can find it at some upscale grocers, also Cost Plus World Market, and IKEA in their market section. Tastes just like cranberries but the berries are smaller.

Funny you should mention that...we actually have a jar of lingonberry jam in the fridge right now...DS13 loves it! I'll keep that in mind if I can't find the HFCS-free cranberry.

Thank you all for this thread. We're going to try to eliminate HFCS from our diet too. I'll post if I find any other foods not mentioned here.

...I can only imagine how this will be relayed to their own kids one day..."you think you have it bad. If I wanted a cookie, I had to go through the whole store reading labels, and even if I found something my mom would only get it on sale or with a coupon....."

:rotfl:

I can still remember back in the 70s when my mom became enlightened :hippie: and it was the end of Cap'n Crunch for me.

This post is really interesting for me because I've been working on HFCS reduction for a while. We buy a lot of organic foods, always have, but still eat too much junk :rolleyes1 I've also got a growing concern for other additives / imported foods that aren't safe.

I just got back from a conference (I work in healthcare) and one of the speakers showed a slide that made the entire audience gasp - the progression of obesity rates in the US. In 1980, only one state had an obesity rate over 29%, and a handful were over 20%. In 2006, 49 states were over 29%. Interestingly enough, a quick glance around the room told me that the healthcare folks in the room fit this statistic (me included).

Thanks for giving me some renewed purpose in putting healthier food in my family's bodies!

I just started reading the book "Fat Land" by Greg Critser. I checked it out from my local library. It's an interesting read so far. It tells the story of why HFCS and other things are in our diets. Plus why the size of food portions in restaurants have been getting bigger and bigger. I'm only on the 3rd chapter but so far I recommend reading the book if you are interested in this topic.

I have a website up and running:

www.StopHFCS.com

Please feel free to send me suggestions, add foods that are ok, or to contribute content. I could really use any and all input you might have.

you can email me at webmaster@stophfcs.com

Thanks all for your wonderful contributions to this thread.

Oh, and recipes would be fantastic!

I haven't had a chance to read through all the posts, but I've been working on eliminating HFCS from our diets and suprisingly it's going well.
As for breads, luckily a local bakery that makes bread distributes it to our Walmart, but I would suggest checking out local bakeries if you have any, chances are they are HFCS free.
I also buy homemade jams at Walmart.
As far as treats, Otis Spunkmeyer double chocolate chip muffins are a big hit at our house. They have alot of other flavors too.
Weight Watchers makes great yogurt without HFCS, the raspberry white chocolate is wonderful!! There's also Blue Bunny, both of these taste like yoplait brand.
Progressive chicken noodle soup is HFCS free. I'm still working on eliminating some products from our house but for most things I've found replacements that are good just slightly more expensive ;)

Tons of great information - thanks everyone!

For those of you looking for a healthier snack bar / granola bar, I just tried one of the new Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch bars, and it was good (assuming you like nuts). It does contain corn syrup, but not NFCS. The ingredients are: almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sugar, corn syrup, and salt. That's for the "almond crunch", there's also a "peanut crunch" variety, bt I haven't tried it yet. I'm always looking for easy, yet healthy snacks that are easy to eat on the go, and this is better than many of the other varieties out there.

Shannon, I tried the Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch bars this weekend - they are delicious! :thumbsup2

I know exactly what you mean!

What I find really difficult is finding a healthy snack I can send with my son to eat at school - he eats breakfast at 7:15 and doesn't get lunch until 12:30 or so and tends to have hypoglycemia, so a quick, portable snack is a necessity. I've been sending the chewy granola bars, even though I know they aren't the best choice, but they fit easily in his gym bag (nutrition break is right after gym) and he can eat them quickly. I should probably try to switch him to the Kashi TLC granola bars...not sure if he'd go for them or not...and then there's the fact that a box of 6 Kashi bars costs about $3-4.

Try Odwalla Bars or Organic Cliff Z bars for kids.

I've missed some pages in between, but I wanted to mention the Safeway O Organics again. We hadn't gone shopping in awhile so I couldn't read our usual labels. But yesterday I brought some stuff home again, and again confirm that they just don't seem to have the HFCS in them!

I'm looking at their Ritz-style crackers and their Seeds&Grains bread right now, and it's not in there. Same with PB and jellies/jams. Good stuff!

Taking it back to Disney...
Does anyone know about Dole Whips? I saw on a website this ingredient list.

Water, High Fructose Corn Sugar, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Maltodextrin, Stabilizers (Cellulose, Locust Bean, Guar, Xanthan, Karaya Gum, Pectin), Citric Acid, Sodium Caseinate (A Milk Derivative), Mono & Diglycerides, Sodium Citrate, Salt, Dipotassium Phosphate, Articial Flavor, Extractives of Annatto & Turmeric.

But just now while googling I found:

Sugar, Dextrose, Pineapple Crystals, Partially hydrogenated soybean oil, Stabilizers (Cellulose, Locust Bean, Guar, Xanthan, Karaya Gum, Pectin), Sodium Silico Aluminate, Vegetable Fiber, Citric Acid, Artificial Flavor, Sodium Caseinate (a milk derivative), Mono & Diglycerides, Sodium Citrate, Salt, Dipotassium Phosphate, Artificial Color Including F.D. & C. Yellow #6.

First...high fructose corn SUGAR?

Second...both posts (I didn't include those here) cite precisionfoods as the source.

OK, well...just looked it up on my own http://www.precisionfoods.com/foodservice/bnd_products_details.cfm?skuid=10922&id=103

Says the dextrose one is it, not the "high fructose corn sugar" one...hmm.

Gack. Could the fact that DS had a tizzyfit directly after eating one actually mean he has CORN problems (corn syrup, and I have heard that dextrose is a corn product), not just HFCS problems???!!!! aughhhhhhhhhhh. I liked the HFCS ingredient list better. :confused3

This might sound like just venting, but if anyone has any knowledge for me, do let me know.

Oh, and just in case his tizzyfit was unrelated to the Dole product...(other than that) we've been working to avoid corn syrup and corn syrup solids, as well as HFCS?

Do you guys know if that's necessary? I just figured that it would be prudent, but if corn syrup and the solids do NOT cause the same problems (assuming no overall corn problem, of course), I would like to know if I'm being overly cautious.

I wish Dole Whips didn't have partially hydrogenated oil!! :( I never knowingly buy foods with partially hydrogenated oil in them. I've read on the DIS that Dole Whips are so good.
