My family just got into camping last year (well my husband has been many time as a kid and teen) but now we go with the kids. We tent camp up here in New England.

I am actually now considering forgoing our 2012 Disney trip and renting a Motorhome and doing a week and a half camping trip next summer. Not exactly sure what area we will be camping and/or if we will do a few campgrounds during that time.

I am looking to find a place to rent a Class C. They say that this vehicles can only get about 10 MPG..how big are the gas tanks? Will we be filling it up constantly? Is it gonna use way more gas than a minivan? LOL

Thanks

Julie,

I have a suggestion for you. If you rent your RV up north there, it WILL cost a lot in gas money. 10-15 mpg is reasonable because a Class C punches a big hole in the wind.

I would offer an alternative. Drive your minivan to Kissimmee (next to WDW) where there is a Cruise America branch for RV Rentals and Sales. They are a national RV rental chain. It's about 10 miles from the Fort. If you are bent on doing the Class C RV thing, I'd look into this. Here is the web site:

http://www.cruiseamerica.com

Choose Florida/Orlando (which is the Kissimmee location). Right now a Class C for 11 nights in July 2011 is $1529 and some change (calendar only goes out to Feb 2012 right now). There are probably other fees, taxes, etc but this means you don't have to pay for 1000 miles each way for gas in the RV.

They have some limitations like they're not open on Sunday for pick-ups or drop-offs. But you can make a room-only ressie at the Fort for a 30-day window in summer 2012 (get a site with the sewer hookups) then wait till the CA site gives you prices for then (you can use the 2011 prices as a guideline). Then you can true up your dates to the week-and-a-half you want. A room-only ressie only trigger's one night's fee as a deposit so it doesn't hurt to book more nights initially.

So if you want to do the Class C thing this is one way to look into it. But note that their Class C only accomodates 3 people. The $1529 was for the next size up which sleeps 5.

Sorry if I wasnt clear..but I meant we will NOT be doing our Disney World Trip. We may camp in New Jersey. Just looking for a good place to rent the motorhome up here.

Ah. No dear, you were clear, I just didn't read your OP closely enough. My bad. Sorry.

Have you considered buying a used, lightweight pop up camper? You could tow a small one with your van. It might be cheaper than renting an motorhome. :)

Me again!
Depending on where you're going, you could also look into renting a camping cabin or a park model RV at the campgrounds you are looking to visit. (of course, that wouldn't work if your destination doesn't have cabins or park models) I know the KOA cabins are pretty nice (My sister has stayed in some). I love camping but I totally understand the desire to get up off the ground! We tent camp but we don't rough it at all!
