Motion sickness on Forbidden Journey?

My daughter experiences motion sickness easily. Should she avoid Forbidden Journey? We've been looking forward to the ride all year, but now I'm reading that there is a lot of movement back and forth.

Also, do scary images come at your face suddenly? That's something I have a problem with!

For me, the bulk of the issues come from the screen. Thankfully, you can close your eyes and those problems go away. But the robot arm DOES move you around.

The things that get close to you are actual things; dementors and acromantulas and the fire from a dragon, oh and the arm of a whomping willow. I don't remember images from the screen showing up in your face. (it's not a 3D ride)

I agree- it's the screen stuff that gets to me for motion sickness. I have zero motion sickness issues with the real things but the screen can be tough to deal with. (I have spots in Soarin' that I can't handle at Disney). It alternates between both so that helps. I wear sea bands and it works wonders for me so I can handle it. But from another post here, I've read that sea bands don't work for everyone and others have motion sickness tips and medications that work better for them.

Scary images don't come to your face but there are objects sort of close. They're not close enough to touch though. They would likely cause my 7 year old to freak out though so she didn't do the ride. (She's barely made 48" on our last trip but wasn't ready for FJ due to the scary objects. But the dinosaurs in Ellen get to her so we knew she wasn't ready for FJ).

:thumbsup2 My son refused to ride our first trip, and the next times back he still wants his eyes closed during the acromantula parts. So I have to keep MY eyes open LOL. I think he closes his eyes right after the dragon breathes fire, then those 8 legged critters show up, and then when you hear Hermione yelling about the whomping willow (I think?) it's safe to open eyes. Or something like that. I'm arachnophobic, too (he learned it from me, sadly) so that part is torture and I try to put it out of my head.

Have her take Meclizine before the you enter the parks. It works wonders on motion sickness. i take it every morning before I head to the parks ad ride all day with no issues. It's non drowsy as well.

It's such and amazing ride. I would hate for anyone to miss it!

YES. That's the only ride to ever nearly do me in completely with motion sickness. To the point I thought we'd have to leave the park. I have ridden it with motion sickness medication (transdermal scop) and while that miracle drug allows me to ride everything else in the world (without it even Space Mountain makes me sick), it barely took the edge off the sickness on FJ. I needed a few minutes to recuperate before we could continue. Without the medication I was undone.

I tried closing me eyes and it didn't help.

Just a quick question how intense is the mummy ride i don't normally go on roller coasters.

Motion sickness on this one bad at all?

No motion sickness on this one for me. Haven't heard of many people reporting that they've gotten sick either.

It isn't that intense. There are a few little drops and turns, but it is short.

Thanks everyone! We just might sit this one out! :wave2:

We went when it first opened. I do get a little sick on the roller coasters that twist and turn. I did go on this and I did feel a little woozy.

I would recommend, though, that you go through the line and then exit at the chicken exit. There really is a lot in the queu to see. when we went they did have a single rider line so you don't have to wait in the regular line. Of course this suggestion is only if you are a harry potter fan.

They also have a separate line to do a castle only tour. Just let a Team Member know and they will direct you.

If you suffer from motion sickness, seriously consider not riding forbidden journey! I do suffer from it pretty severely (the cat in the hat spins were almost too much for me) and have hated roller coasters since childhood. I was proud of myself for being braver with each visit to DL, WDW, and Us/IOA. I handled The Matterhorn, then Thunder Mountain, then splash mountain with no problems. Forbidden journey warns multiple times of the possibility of motion sickness, but I thought maybe I was over it and could handle it (and there was a lot of pressure from my kids). The worker at the entrance to the long line said it was fine, simulated, just close my eyes. I instantly knew I was going to hate the ride once it started...the robotic arm is on some sort of carousel that flips, twists and spins...forward, backward, etc. as you are flung in and out of different scenes, many of which include a concave-like IMAX...Ugh, the combination was a nightmare for me. I can handle soarin CA because there is little actual movement and so I would just close my eyes, but this was like torture. I just kept repeating, "I hate it, I hate it! And tried to look down at my strap buckle. I literally thought I was going to toss my cookies right there, but made it to the bathroom and ended my "7 year no-vomit streak". We had to leave the park (lucky we saved it until later in the evening).

On a good note, my 3 girls loved it and said it was the greatest ride ever...even the 7 year old (although she said she closed her eyes a lot).:sick::sick:

I do suffer from bad motion sickness but i dont think its very intense at all.

Soon as the screens come on i look for a little bit and turn me head 2 the side and watch the other carts lol

It doesn't affect me nor my wife, even my mom who is not into extreme rides by any stretch was fine on this... honestly, everyone in my family has been fine on this ride so far...

However...

I have had several instances on this ride with strangers and vomit, so yes I would think it does affect some people.

I would also agree with some of the other posters, it is likely the screen that causes it - probably worsened because it is a tad fuzzy these days.

I would also highly agree still going through the queue! It is one of my favorite parts of the attraction, great detail (probably the best in all of Universal Orlando parks) and if you are a Harry Potter fan, this is the meat of it - there is so much in the lengthy queue to see!

And on the scary images question, not so much IMAGES, but there are actual animatronics that will certainly deliver a few jumps (worse depending on where in the cart you are sitting). I would actually say... %80 of the ride consist of the darker parts of the Harry Potter franchise, which happens to be the only thing I wish they would have truly done different, but here nor there. If this becomes the hold up, I would go to youtube and watch a ride through to judge for yourself.

Great ride if you do choose to ride it, but I would also hate for you or your daughter to ride it and it ruins the beautiful WWoHP visit for you :-/

This is the only ride I've ever gotten motion sickness riding. Closing your eyes does help--DD insisted on riding it twice, of course, so my second time with my eyes closed was kind of boring but allowed me to ride it with her. ;)

Hi we just got back yesterday from IOA. We rode forbidden journey once each day. My DH who never gets sick on rides gets motion sickness on this one as well as me. My DD who gets motion sickness easier doesn't have a problem,

I really think it depends on the person. I agree go through the que it is awesome. If you have doubts I wouldn't do it and chance ruining my day.

IMO Honestly, it is a really good ride, but it is not worth getting sick.

Happy choice making.

I took dramamine and still got sick on this ride. It took me three tries on Expedition Everest to get sick without meds.

I suffer with very bad motion sickness. I usually take a chewable sickness pill. I take this first thing in the morning and usually lasts for most of the day. Without the pill I would be sick on everything. The Harry Potter ride is similar to the jerks of Spider-Man but a bit more so. I do the ride on early entry as we stay on-site and before breakfast! About 2 hours after taking the sickness pill. After the ride I feel slightly queasy. Without the sickness pill I am even sick on Disney's THundermountain railroad, and even Soaring. Sick even after Shrek ride. So what I am saying if I can do it anyone can. I would not recommend missing it. that would be so sad. But take measures beforehand and enjoy the ride. ;)

I had a hard time on it and I can still ride Expedition Everest, Space Mountain, and Soarin without too many issues. I am glad I read this post as I need to get something before our next trip as I miss several rides due to motion sickness. It is a great ride-my kids loved it-even my spider fearing daughter!

I agree with many of the previous posters - I too suffer from motion sickness, I have taken the non-drowzy dramamine, but after watching MythBusters I also take ginger!

If you get sick from the effects of Star Tours at Hollywood Studios (a ride I now avoid, and just won't do! I can do Soarin, but Star Tours is off the list) this ride can cause problems - like others posted, turning your head during those intense moments help - (I'll add even the Nemo ride in Epcot, there is one part I have to close my eyes)

I also suggest watching on youtube the ride so you are prepared!

And my mother who was in her mid '70s rode it - once! We did the preview tour the night before, this helped me familiarize myself with the layout of Universal, and see Harry Potter, without rushing - the next day we did RD! She just wanted to after seeing everything - but again, we watched the youtube videos and I felt we were really prepared! DD rode again at night, but not mom, she said she loved it... once was enough!
